This is a picture of Haruka's plate before six of us dove into a memorable meal.  Camille and Amy spent the afternoon making eggplant parmesan from scratch.  We bought the linguine but everything else was grown either in our garden or next door by Jason and Haruka and processed in our kitchen.    From the bottom of the plate going clockwise are pickled beets, fried okra, sweet and tangy refrigerator pickles, eggplant parmesan, and linguine with cherry tomatoes in the middle.

Here's how we made the eggplant parmesan.  We began by plunging tomatoes into boiling water to loosen their skins, taking out the seeds, roasting eggplant and then chopping, chopping, chopping.  Sometimes we go shopping to get a good meal and other times we just start chopping.  We layered the eggplant and sauce with sauteed peppers, onions, shallots, leeks and garlic.  




It's hard not to get goofy with all the food parading through our kitchen!  These eggplants came from Central Carolina Community College's Land Lab and because the one on the left had a nose-like protrusion, Camille drew a face on it.  Bob grew the potatoes.  One of these months, we really should weigh the food we process in our kitchen!  At the height of the season we easily take in and cook up 100 pounds of fresh, locally grown produce.



The ground settled around the grounding rod next to the electrical box by the road, making it stick up enough to bend the blade on our shared riding mower.  Bob had remove and straighten the blade before he could finish mowing the lawn.



This is Lyle and Tami's pond without any water after the excavators began digging out a spot deep enough for diving into.  A group of neighbors sits in the spot where they plan to build a new home.




Walking over to take a look at the pond digging progress was as good an excuse as any for our gang to wander through the woods together.  Camille and Haruka took the opportunity to get caught up.  Jim, Camille, Shane, Garth and Haruka are in the second photo.

Jason and Haruka came over and pickled fourteen pounds of okra one Sunday afternoon.  We sampled them after a week and they are tasty!




Garth and Shane wore gloves to cut up jalapenos for hot sauce.  Amy and Camille made baba ghanoush, which is a dip very similar to hummus only made with eggplant instead of chick peas.



Camille received a new dress in the mail from Alaska from Pamela.  Amy joined the Natural Chef program at CCCC can now be found wearing her new black uniform in their giant kitchen.




Camille found an unusual mushroom while walking in the woods with Jason in search of a Fringe Tree.  It took Bob a few minutes to identify it as a Blue Milky.  When we touched the mushroom, it left behind a blue liquid.




Matt, Peter and Jean have moved into David's house and dropped by to meet Spot one evening.



Bob cradles the first cantaloupe to come from his own garden.  Cantaloupe has long been his favorite fruit but he's never grown one of his own before.
