A little taste of Rome – June 18 and 19, 2014
THE COLISEUM
Probably the oldest stadium in the world, built in the year 80 and still being maintained.
OH NOES!
There’s a pigeon on my finger! Or, Oh No! The columns are falling! As tourists we often found irony in the mundane.
VICTOR EMMANUAL MEMORIAL
A. k. a. The Typewriter or the Altar of the Nation was built entirely out of marble and completed in 1911 to honor the first king of a united Italy. We were attracted to the enormous statue of Victor on his flashy horse.
ST. PETER’s BASILICA
The next day we went over to Vatican City and climbed to the top of the Basillica, so here’s another page of fun photos: The Vatican
BRIDGE ACROSS THE TIBER
After leaving Vatican City, we crossed the Tiber where Camille looks northeast towards the Castel Sant Angelo and beyond to the Supreme Court of Cassation.
PANTHEON
Viewed from within and from without.
HYBRIDS
We came upon a fountain there the horses wore fish tails and the human’s had tails, too.
ROMAN COBBLESTONES
Definitely not as clean and tidy as the cobblestones in Lugano. In many places the chinking was gone, replaced by weeds and cigarette butts. Lugano smelled like flowers, Florence of sewers and Rome smelled like an ashtray.
NOT YOUR EVERY DAY SIGHTS
Two people in a silken bag? A man driving a horse cart with his cell phone to his ear.
TREVI FOUNTAIN
More thrashing horses but no water due to maintenance. We turned our backs to the fountain and tossed coins over our left shoulders anyway, having heard that they were gathered and used to feed the poor.
SLEEPER CAR TO SICILY
Our stay in Rome was short. Before we knew it we were nestled in a sleeper car bound for the tip of the boot and beyond.
