GUSTAVUS, ALASKA

BOB AND CAMILLE VISIT THEIR GOOD FRIEND, PAMELA

July 23 - August 21, 2005

OUTSIDE THE TOWN

Now here's a pretty scene; cold weather ponies grazing lush pasture.

Gustavus is nestled just outside the borders of Glacier Bay National Park and is cut off from the rest of the world by beautiful mountain ranges.

GETTING AROUND

Pamela's friend, Thomas lent her two bikes for Bob and Camille to pedal around on.  Here Camille rides into town for a trip to the dock and the general store.

STATE DOCK

Pam and Camille ride down the dock to look at the birds and scan the water for humpbacked whales.  From the dock we saw whales, harbor seals, ravens, seagulls, and pigeon guillemots with their red throats and legs.

The view from beneath the dock on August 14th.

A Stellar Sea Lion surfaces for a breath of air.

Pamela with her bike on the end of the dock on August 14th.  Notice the milk crate she uses to haul cargo on her bike.

MOUNTAIN VIEW ROAD

This aptly named road leads from the dock to Pamela's home.  As far as roads go, this is about it.  Keep on going and it takes you to Glacier Bay.

PAM'S HOUSE

Pam and Bob stand outside her house while Camille photographs a moose skull on a moss-covered tree stump.  For more photos of life around the house, click on Around the House.

KAYAKING IN THE BAY

On July 23rd, Pam took us Kayaking in Glacier Bay.  For more photos of this special day, click on Walking on the Wild Side.

YARD ART

More yard art, courtesy of Mother Nature.  For other photos of pretty flowers and plants we saw during our month with Pamela, go to Roadside Attractions.

PLANE WRECK

This is what I call carnage in the woods.

Pam took us for a short hike to the scene of a plane wreck on July 25th.  She and Camille clowned around inside the plane for Bob's camera.  For more photos of the wreck, check out Walking on the Wild Side.

GOOD EATING

So many berries, so little time.  Pam showed us how to eat while we walked.  When we weren't out and about, we were home whipping up some stellar meals.  For the culinary tour, check out Eat, Drink and Be Merry.

HIKING THE BARTLETT RIVER TRAIL

On July 31st, we rode our bikes 5 miles to Glacier Bay National Park and hiked along the river.  For more photos of our anniversary hike, go to Walking on the Wild Side.
