PIEDMONT - SHARING THE VISION

Earth Day Weekend, April, 2007

INDUSTRIAL

This is where the Piedmont Biofuels makes biodiesel.  At Industrial, there are offices, gardens and the refinery.

TRUCKING

At Piedmont, they don't just make fuel, they are sharing a vision of community sustainability.

THE LAB

Rachel in her lab with her blue gloves on.  Bob made the trip to North Carolina to help Rachel adjust the settings on their Gas Chromatograph.

    ART PLAYS A BIG PART

This giant chess set attests to the playful nature of the folks at Piedmont.

Metal sculpture abounds, courtesy of Lyle.

COOP

Just a short walk from Lyle and Tami's place, the Coop is home to the volunteers and some beautiful gardens.

WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM

A series of bathtub ponds and green, living things clean up the wash water left over from making Biodiesel.

DOUG'S GREENHOUSE

The coop gardens were one of the farms on the Earth Day weekend farm tour circuit.

LOTS OF PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW MORE

Lyle gives a tour of the coop operation.

SCOTT'S OFFICE

Just because he runs a business out of his home at the Coop, doesn't mean Scott has to hang out inside.

EARTH DAY

Rachel and Scott invited us to join them at Shakori Hills to celebrate Earth Day in style at their annual Grassroots Festival.

THE CHATHAM MARKETPLACE

Please forgive us for not taking a picture of Tami at her booth.  Mary, on the right, is the store manager at Chatham Marketplace, where thirty percent of the food sold is local. Tami decided Pittsboro needed a place to buy local food and Chatham Marketplace is the result.

FRISBEE

Bob and Scott take a break from a heavy round of Frisbee.

UP IN THE AIR

The festival had everything you could imagine, including this Para glider.  There was music, poetry readings, food, dancing, information booths, face painting, and probably even juggling.

ONE OF THOSE AHHH MOMENTS

Poem in pocket, Lyle Estill enjoys the last rays of the days sun at the festival.  Not only does Lyle write poetry, he wrote "Biodiesel Power" and authors the Piedmont Energy Blog.  He and Tami and their two sons camped out at Shakori over the long weekend.

MEANWHILE, BACK IN THE WOODS

Bob sits on one of Lyle's many creations.  We enjoyed Lyle and Tami's Home in the Woods, which is surrounded by nature and art.  Lyle and Tami were  gracious enough to give us the run of the place while we were in Pittsboro.
