April, 2007 - Issue #71

Bob and Camille move to Texas and, among other things, celebrate Earth Day in Pittsboro, North Carolina

6 YEARS AGO - MAUI 2001

Bob enjoys Earth Day with a face painted in rich earth tones.  In fact, every color on his face is made from dirt.  For a few more images of this day, click on Maui Green Energy Does Earth Day, 2001

EXODUS

April 5th in Amarillo, Texas - the halfway point.  With a truck full of work stuff, gardens, furniture, knick knacks, clothes and kitchen stuff and suffering from the flu, Bob drove the 800 miles south to Denton, Texas.  We snapped a few photos along the way.  Check out our  First Impressions of Texas

AHHHHHH - HOME AT LAST, ER...

We plopped the lawn chairs down in the back yard and said to each other, "Okay, so this is home, now."  And a very pretty place it is, with its vibrant lawn and gnarled Post Oaks.

BIRD SANCTUARY

The trees draw dozens of different species of birds.  Bob installed bird feeders right away in order to lure them closer to our windows.  We see cardinals, chickadees, jays, mockingbirds, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, sparrows, doves, grackles, crows, flycatchers and finches.  The squirrels want more than their share, so Bob had to move the feeder from this spot and then to another location before he outsmarted them.

TAKING THE EDGE OFF

Every cabin in the woods needs a fireplace. A little fire takes the chill out of an early spring morning while Camille takes the edge off her appetite with breakfast before a long hike.

THOSE POOR VEGANS

Here's Fried sun-dried tomato and garlic polenta with baked teriyaki tofu, avocado, tomato basil sauce, soy sour cream and hot sauce.

ON THE RAIL TRAIL

Denton's Rail Trail is part of a proposed 250 mile Trinity Trail system.

OUT FOR A LITTLE HIKE

There's no better way to spend a Sunday morning.  We walked down the trail from the Post Office to the Square and back, a distance of about 5 miles.

ON THE SQUARE

Topiary and flowers greeted us in Historic Downtown Denton.

BACK TO OUR COTTAGE

The best part about getting out and hiking in the morning is knowing you don't have to do anything else that day.  Camille sits on the porch after a shower.

Drying her hair in the sun.

LOCALLY GROWN

This Spinach was started in Colorado last year.  Bob used a forklift to load the work gardens onto the U-Haul.  The spinach survived a long, cold winter and two days in a U-Haul to flourish and get eaten in Texas.

SHARING THE WEALTH

As part of the Chatham County, North Carolina Earth Day festivities, Piedmont Biofuels sponsored tours of their Biodiesel Plant and their Coop.  More on this story here: Piedmont - Sharing the Vision

RAIN OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS

April 24 and the heavens opened up.  The thunder and lightening were overwhelming.  Camille unplugged everything in the house and Bob was at work, struggling with a trash pump that wouldn't work while standing in the surging water.

TROUT LAKE

Pretty soon, the yard was mostly under water - especially the southeast corner.

Which was being fed by this stream running from west to east across the property.

On the street the cars were pushing bow waves and in many places the water was up over the curb.  This storm was quite out of the ordinary and dumped up to 5 inches of rain in one afternoon.

SNEAK PREVIEW

Guess you'll have to wait until next month to see what beach Camille is walking down in this picture.

THIS MONTH'S QUOTES:

"The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

" Coming here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future. Losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the stock market. I am here to speak for all generations to come." - Severn Suzuki, 12-year old Canadian speaker at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brazil

"A finite world can support only a finite population; therefore, population growth must eventually equal zero." - Garrett Hardin
