BUS TRIPPING WITH SHIRLEY

In which Bob, Camille and Shirley take the mass transit system for a spin on September 16, 2006

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHIRLEY!

Both Shirley and Bob have September birthdays, so we decided to get together and celebrate.  Shirley's house, on the left,  was built in 1932.  It was designed by architect Eugene G. Groves (1882-1967) who also designed many of the buildings on the Colorado State University Campus as well as many other important public buildings, some of which are on the National Register of Historical Places.

After arriving at Shirley's house and sitting for a spell in her backyard, we decided to embark upon a car-free outing, beginning with a bus ride to the creek path.

MOST PEOPLE WHO RIDE THE BUS ARE WEIRD

But they are mostly harmless and not too scary if you take a moment to say "Hi."

ONE OF OUR DESTINATIONS

After we got off the bus and walked through the Farmer's Market (where we stopped to eat a tamale) we arrived at the Creek Path.  This was a lovely place to walk, just like Shirley said it would be.  Bob looked quite dapper in his corduroy blazer and Camille's hair blended in with the Silver Lace Vine.

WONDERS ALONG THE WAY

Yep, we had to wonder what this special brand of graffiti was all about.  We saw these rabbits a few times during out journey.

So, we walked uptown to a restaurant and had lunch, and then caught a bus back to Shirley's neighborhood where we stopped in at the University of Denver campus.

THE LILY POND

What a peaceful addition to a university campus!

THE EVANS CHAPEL

Bob gazes into the pond with the Chapel in the background.  John Evans built the chapel in this photo as a memorial to his daughter Josephine Evans Elbert in 1878.   Evans was the first territorial governor of Colorado and founder of the Colorado Seminary (now the University of Denver).

WATER LILIES

We were fascinated by the natural beauty of these stately plants.  The pond was lined with benches where people could sit and eat their lunches.  On this day, there was a wedding taking place in the Chapel and well-dressed couples strolled the grounds.

A STUDY IN CONTRASTS

The designers of the lily pond and its surroundings artfully paired calming and energizing sights and sounds.  For instance, the water poured in a sheet from one pond down into another, filling the air with a soothing sound while these nearby flowers bloomed with a vibrant color that was off the charts.

LOTUS BLOSSOM

It's no wonder the Water Lily has been immortalized in the sacred art of India.  This bloom seemed to vibrate with energy while at the same time drawing the viewer into its center.
