JANUARY JAUNT TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Bob, Camille and Amy take a short trip to California to look at universities.

January 1 -15, 2007

WHERE THE GULLS ARE

The first thing we did after getting our rental car from Bio-Beetle Rentals was head for the water.

We watched other people feeding the gulls and then got brave and tried it ourselves.  If you held the bread up for a few moments, pretty soon a gull would fly over and take it out of your hand.  What a sensation it was to feel the yank of their beak on that piece of bread.

Amy and Camille were trying to pose alongside a gull but it flew away as soon as they crouched down.  We were hoping for warm weather but we happened to be in California during some record cold temperatures.  There was even a little snow and enough of a freeze to ruin millions of dollars worth of crops.

STREETS AND EATS

This street was typical.  At least half of the cars were either gray, or silver, or charcoal, or slate colored.  We did a lot of driving.  But we only ate out a couple of times. Amy humors our shutter at Real Foods Daily in Santa Monica.  The neatest thing about the restaurants in Santa Monica is the way people leaving the restaurant will hand over their leftover lunch to the homeless people that wait on the  park benches outside on the sidewalk.

Bob and Amy clown around on the California State Long Beach campus and on the beach.  For more photos of the universities we investigated, go to Romping Across California Campuses

HER MAJESTY

Bob took Camille to see the Queen Mary.  She remembers fondly the times her father would take her to the docks in the New York Harbor and show her this very ship.  Dad told Camille that his parents traveled to Europe on the Queen Mary many years ago.

The ropes that secured this beautiful ship to the docks were a foot in diameter!  Speaking of big, check out this home!

MISSION BAY PARK

RELAXING AT 'HOME'

We got in early enough to sit in the sun.  We thought Amy would fit right in with the rest of the California elite.  She looks just like a movie star!

MORNING CHORES

Amy prepares some carrots for later on down the road.

BEACH BREAK

The pier at Ocean Beach (near San Diego) is in the background.  All roads led to the beach during this trip!

FUELING AROUND

Bob refuels the veggie car with Biodiesel the day before we head back.

A RACE

We reached the hotel just before sunset.

And then raced to the shore to see the sun set.

MIRROR IMAGE

After we got comfy, Bob took this photo of us through the mirror.
