CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP – PART TWO
BOB AND SHAUN DRIVE FROM BERTHOUD, COLORADO TO LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
January 9 and 10, 2006
DAY FIVE
Gallup New Mexico to Mojave, California
We checked into a hotel in Gallup, New Mexico on old Route 66. Bob has decided that he now knows the two armpits of our county – and this is one.
Double decker container trains plied the desert tracks, bringing Wal-Mart products to your neighborhood.
Arizona
This is Indian Country – and they have trinkets for the unsuspecting traveler.
Here’s the Trading Post – complete with fuel tanks…
…and cement teepee.
We spotted this velociraptor is eastern Arizona.
More teepees, luckily the natives did not notice our transit of their territory.
UFO’s being serviced in western Arizona.
California
Water diversion pipelines from the Colorado River, outside of Needles on the Arizona-California border.
Welcome to the Promised Land.
And not so promising.
After coming across the Mojave desert, the drinking fountain is marked with a sign saying “Non-Potable Water” – go figure!
Train across the desert.
A Solar Power Station in the desert.
Another Solar Power Station…
Joshua trees and not much else.
DAY SIX
Mojave, California to Marina DelRay, California
A large Wind Farm stretches across the horizon.
A cell phone tower disguised as a pine tree in Southern
California.
Getting near the coast.
Fillmore, California – citrus and avocado abundance.
Strawberry Fields Forever!
Ventura, California
Shaun of Bio-Beetle and Kent of Channel Islands.
3 diesels in a row at the Ventura Marina
Kent’s ride and statement.
Beers with Joe (Papa Smurf) of Bio-Beetle LA at Ericsson’s on the Pier
Ventura Pier at sunset.
We had a wild ride from Ventura down to Marina DelRey!
Marina DelRay, California – the odometer reads 3361 – or
3351 miles from our starting point.
