LA BOQUITA

Animals by the sea – a leisurely afternoon spent at a beach cafe on the Pacific side of Nicaragua with Cecile and Silvio

July 16, 2005

HORSES, OF COURSE

The owner of this horse parked him on the beach by tying up his reins and went into the cafe.

Molly and Camille took full advantage and rode down the beach and back for 10 cordobas (the equivalent of 65 cents) each.

The little mare Molly and I rode couldn’t have weighed 800 pounds and her front legs seemed to come out of the same hole but she was surefooted and strong like all the little mutt horses we’ve seen in the third world.

DOGS AND KIDS

The dogs were hopeful and thin. This small boy used a stick to keep the dogs from pestering the diners. He relished the opportunity to pick on creatures smaller than he, running around the cafe for hours in his green slippers with his stick and a red lollypop hanging out of his mouth.

Older children offered houses made of shells and other bits of seaside sculpture for sale.
