Casa Kumasi relocates to the Airport District of Accra prior to final departure – and it feels like civilization! December 1st and 2nd, 2013
THE LAVENDER LODGE
Boy did we get spoiled! WiFi, good food, a swimming pool, hot water, and real customer service – all things we were missing in Kumasi were to be found at the Lavender Lodge.
(ANOTHER) TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
This time to find Bob’s old house in the airport district where he lived in 1972/1973. The Airport District has seen a lot of changes over the last 40 years. What was once a quiet residential area is now full of large, new commercial buildings interspersed with houses. It made finding Bob’s old house harder, but not impossible. Bob spent hours riding his motorcycle around these streets when he was a boy so he was basically able to walk right to where the house was, even though not much looked the same. You can see the house on Sixth Street right next to a big new commercial building under construction.
YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN
The house was still recognizable to Bob, even though it was hard to get a look at over the fence. On the right is a picture of Bob’s mom Alice in the driveway of that house in 1975.
OH NOES!
Bob almost died here. This intersection was a lot quieter then (no commercial activity) and he used to come through here pretty fast on that motorcycle. He recalls making the turn to the right at about 60 miles per hour, hitting a bump in the road and becoming inadvertently airborne. Fortunately the landing was successfully accomplished.
CUTE LITTLE CAFES
The District is now home to cute little cafes, and lots of flowers – sort of like Paris – in Ghana.
PACKING FRENZY!
That BJ is really something! She went from packing fiend to beautiful jet-setter in a matter of seconds. We will miss her infectious smile.
