Spring Planting and CSA Potluck at the Farm – March 30, 2014
THE STAGE IS SET
Today’s goal is to plant these flats of kale, onion and lettuce in the back field. But first, compost must be added to the beds.
THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT
The two beds were covered in leaf mulch, holes made for the plants and filled with compost. This took the group about an hour.
Jason and Kim mix the compost into the soil in each leaf pocket. Mike fills a bucket with compost.
FOCUSED
George, Jason and Haruka work their way down the row as does Graham, the newest hand on the farm.
SHARING
Inevitably, conversations began springing up as the day became warmer and we drew closer to the completion of the task. Young Maya was a great little helper and learned a lot from her mother Anky.
KIDS IN THE CLOVER
The three youngsters in the group went on a hunt for four leaf clovers. This kept them busy for quite some time.
LET THE PLANTING BEGIN
Meanwhile, the beds have been fully prepared and now it’s time for the tiny plants to move into their new homes.
LIZ AND LINDA
Liz finishes a row of red kale and takes on some spring onions with Linda.
HARMONY AND HOPE
Nothing could be nicer than a couple of hours of honest work and the sight of these precious little greens peeking out of the leaves from their compost pockets.
IT’S A WRAP!
Before we knew it, the work was done, tools rounded up and time to head over to Troutsfarm for Potluck.
BIRTHDAY CAKE
Camille places a blazing cake between Linda, whose birthday was the previous day and Kai who also recently had a birthday. Kai filled his cheeks with air and blew out the candles to everyone’s delight.
