Proof that April showers bring May flowers – May, 2015

PEONIES

We don’t regret investing in five peony plants a few years ago. They are among the first flowers to spark our yard with fragrance.

MRS. FDR

Mrs. FDR was the first to bloom this year on May 2nd, a week or two later than usual, followed by Karl, Felix and Shirley.

KARL, FELIX AND SHIRLEY

Karl Rosenfield and Felix Crousse both provide deep pink blooms. Shirley Temple is virginal white as is Festiva Maxima, who did not set on buds this year. We chose these five varieties for their fragrance and ability to thrive in zone 7.

SIMPLE PLEASURE

Camille loves to walk the yard in search of beauty and bring it inside. The irises and water irises were especially prolific this year and also smell divine.

FOOD HAS FLOWERS, TOO!

Chives and comfrey add a splash of lavender to the garden.

SETTIN’ ON

20150503BlueberryBuds

We may get a handful of blueberries this year. Our blueberries struggle, unlike the shrubs at work which astound all with their abundance.

DIANTHUS

This beauty of a plant comes back year after year.

ANNUALS

Right outside the back door we installed fragrant red velour petunias and playful snap dragons.
