A big month of short, cold days featuring our Hoppin’ John party, some heavy lifting at The Plant,
a memorable trip to a local museum and getting snowed in with our neighbors.
SEASON’S GREETINGS
Just had to share these two milestone photos from our Christmas cards. Catherine and Babe Armantrout celebrated 68 years of marriage and Shirley her 80th birthday.
5th ANNUAL HOPPIN’ JOHN PARTY
We like to start the year fortuitously, with a bowl of black-eyed peas, rice, greens and corn bread. Lore says if this is the first thing you eat in the new year, you will be lucky and rich all year. Might as well share the wealth, so we use our big pots and invite our friends. For more, see our Hoppin’ John Party page.
MANY HANDS MAKE BIG WORK
Bob, Lyle, Zafer, Malcolm, Jules and a strong group of volunteers picked up a shed and moved it across the property. See the whole story on Sugar Shack Move
SMALL WONDER
Meanwhile, back in Colorado King of Cute Nolan thinks deep thoughts, smiles and chortles.
DADDY DEAR
Strong, gentle, wise, playful – Tyler Johnson is a great dad.
WALKING TO THE NEIGHBOR’S
On one of those sunny, not-so-cold days we walked over to Tami and Lyle’s, stopping to pet Lyle Lyle’s crocodile.
NEW HOUSE
When the pond is still, Lyle and Tami’s beautiful new house casts a pretty reflection.
OLD HOUSE
Camille found Chris and Alisa’s 115-year-old farm house lit by late afternoon sun against a moody sky.
ANOTHER DAM WALK
Heavy rains had the spillway in an uproar, but walking with Shelley is always a calming experience.
EDIBLE EVERYTHING
Every Friday during CSA season we pick up a huge box of vegetables from Edible Earthscapes. Their carrots are especially fine this year.
DINOS, AND SPIDERS AND LEMURS, OH MY!
Zoila, Camille, Amie, Noah and Eden spent the day at the best museum ever. Don’t miss the photos and video at: Museum of Life
RESILIENCE
Snow came to Moncure in a storm that swept the East Coast off it’s feet. Find out how we weathered it on our Snowzilla page.

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:
“The feeling of asphyxiation brought on by densely populated residential areas is countered if close and warm relationships develop, if communities are created, if the limitations of the environment are compensated for in the interior of each person who feels held within a network of solidarity and belonging. In this way, any place can turn from being a hell on earth into the setting for a dignified life.” -Pope Francis in his Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ On Care for our Common Home
“I think the overwhelming majority of the American people know that we have got to stand together, that we’re going to grow together, that we’re going to survive together, and that if we start splintering, we’re not going to succeed in a highly competitive international economy.” – Bernie Sanders
“One of the key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace. Good people don’t go into government.” – Donald J. Trump
