APRIL 2017, ISSUE #191

April is one of our favorite months up here in the temperate zone with its cool nights, warm days, sweet-scented air, and the exuberance of untarnished life.

REFLECTIONS

April 3 – the skies pour puddles for the sun to kiss at the end of the day, life teeming just below the surface.

ART, POETRY, AND PROSE

April 7 we joined a substantial crowd at the Joyful Jewel in downtown Pittsboro for readings by some of our favorite authors, Mary Barnard and Santa Al among them.

TALENT TROVE

Our neighborhood is a hotbed of talent. Take Ben Schikowitz, for example. He made this painting which now brightens the wall between our desks. See more of his label-defying art on Facebook: Ben Shikowitz Art

STOCKING UP

Two things we keep in stock are burgers and chili sauce. This month Camille made a double batch of Ultimate Veggie Burgers and we took Oliver to Grand Asia for Mae Ploy sweet chili sauce. When we peer into our cupboards and deep freeze, we see money in the bank.

ALTERNATIVES

We made a new trail this month. Sometimes the best solution is to walk the other way.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Fragrant blooms falling over themselves to catch our eye. Ginger sending down roots – life is busting out all over!

It makes us happy to see the gardens bloom prettier every year. The Iris lead the way followed by Azalea, and then the Peonies we planted seven years ago. After that it’s all roses. Check out our garden abundance on this page: Flor-Abunda

TORRENTIAL

Big rain blew in and turned the trail out back into a creek.

Flooded the garden, too

SHOW GARDEN

We planted potatoes to go with the garlic Bob put in last fall. Peppers will be next!

IF YOU PLANT IT, THEY WILL COME

That milk weed Camille brought home from a Debbie Roos Pollinator Workshop last year put out a healthy crop of leaves this year, drawing the attention of a monarch butterfly which laid some eggs. As nature intended, they hatched, ate most of the leaves and left. We counted three caterpillars.

PEEK-A-BOO BOY

Little Nolan, getting bigger every day way out there in Colorado. Keep up the good work, youngster!

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:

“When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic.” – Dresden James

“He (Trump) is the emetic of the world. He is what happens when you take the red pill, the blue pill and the radioactive green pill and chase it all with a shot of broken glass and death.” – Mark Morford

“But you were born to bully anyone who’ll let you do it. The strong were made to bully and the weak to knuckle under.” – Rhett Butler to Scarlett O’Hara in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind
