Lots to be thankful for this month, such as our neighbors (past, present, and future), and mild weather, blooms from the yard, fresh turmeric and ginger just in time for flu season, fun and fulfilling work, fried green tomatoes, our grandson, Nolan, and a Thanksgiving that couldn’t be beat!
NEIGHBORHOOD EVENT
Jenn and Kam string lights inside the tent in preparation for Sparkroot Farm’s debut event, a two-day workshop on Learning Elderhood, while Bob sets up the Use Yer Foot hand wash stations. Sparkroot Farm is the brainchild of our neighbor, Alisa, and their fiscal sponsor is Tami’s nonprofit, Abundance NC.
MATT, DANA, AND BABY GAEL AT THE PLANT
Former neighbors (and hopefully, future), Matt and Dana, stopped in at The Plant and introduced us to their new son, Gael.
STILL FLOWERING
Due to another mild fall season, we saw hydrangeas, azaleas, daisies, and roses in bloom during the same week. Camille picked this bouquet on November 5th.
HARVESTS
Camille brought in a nice haul of ripe peppers well before the first frost. Bob began digging up his fine-looking ginger.
GINGER PLANTS
This is what ginger looks in the ground and uprooted, and turmeric and ginger rinsed.
PROCESSING STATION
This year, Bob has done all the ginger and turmeric processing. He cleans the roots, scraping away the tougher bits, then processes it before freezing in tablespoons. He has also found a market for cleaned, unprocessed ginger with local kombucha brewers,

We probably mentioned this before, but food is super fun, and we love to eat! On the left are fried green tomatoes from Shelley’s garden. On the right, our Thanksgiving tofurky roast, and Vegan Chestnut Sausage Dressing adapted from Camille’s Nana’s recipe. Mm..Mmmm.
BLIZZARD BRANCH EXCURSION
Bob drove down to South Carolina with Rose to fetch some fresh-squeezed sugar cane juice for Fair Game Beverage Company.
