SEPTEMBER 2017, ISSUE #196

A good month in which Camille visits her bestie Pamela, we host a neighborhood potluck, and celebrate Bob’s 59th birthday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Slightly out of Camille’s league, but good fun for the most part, Camille found herself at a college football game in Minnesota with good friend Pam and family. In the stands are Pam and her niece Katy, Pam’s father and mother, brother Scott, and Scott’s brother-in-law, Bill. On the field, wearing the number 4 jersey is Scott’s son, Matthew. Read all about the ups and downs of that day, here: Collegeville Football

LAKE BREAK

The next day we found ourselves at Scott and Linda’s lakeside cabin. Here’s Pam and her mother, with Scott and Linda’s dog, Roger. Scott in the driver’s seat, with Linda, and Pam’s father. Scott and Linda were fabulous hosts, who went out of their way to give us the perfect getaway experience. See more photos of this majical weekend at: Up at the Lake

MALL OF AMERICA

Camille didn’t want to leave Minnesota without stepping inside one of the largest malls in the country (second largest in terms of retail space, largest if you include their indoor Nickelodeon Universe amusement park). As expected, it was mall-on-steroids, loud, and buzzing with activity.  Here’s the stats: 96 acres, 530 shops, 11,000-13,000 employees. Camille found something resembling a horse and latched onto it for comfort. Pam tries to get her head around the steampunk legging fashion.

BACK TO THE EVERY DAY

And then we were back at Duane and Shirley’s every day life, a slice of heaven in a woodsy cul-de-sac. More photos at: Pam and The Folks

BACK HOME WITH A YELLOW THEME

Bob waited for Camille to return before harvesting an immense yellow pepper. We gobbled it up in two days. A yellow bird, most likely a Summer Tanager, hit our living room window and sat on the front porch, stunned, for close to half an hour.

POTLUCK

We celebrated Bob’s 59th birthday with a neighborhood potluck. Spot got to meet Austin, Michael, and Jamie.

PINK AND BLACK AT THE PLANT

At work, the pink muhly grass is in bloom, and Camille and Malcolm found a strange black fungus on the Pittsboro Farm and Forest Trail.

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:

“We live in a culture that has objectified and commodified everything. And in which the sense of our entitlement is magnified and the sense of our impact on the living world is diminished.” – Green Man Ramblings

“Unlike Americans, the Swedes don’t go about in their pajamas. Also absent were cholo caps, team sports toggery, and clown sneakers.” – James Howard Kunstler October, 20, 2014

“For what it’s worth, I’ve been a cynic for as long as I can remember. People ask me to believe in things — family, gods, kings, myself. It was often tempting, until I saw where belief got people. So I said no, thank you to belief.” – Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones Season 6 Finale
