DECEMBER, 2018 #211

Travel, travel, travel. Travel for work and travel for pleasure. Bob goes to Liberty, Kansas and Chicago, Illinois for his auditing work and we both spend some time in Colorado visiting family and friends and strolling  down memory lane to the Big Thompson River with Amy before returning to good old North Carolina for down home garden goodness.

AIR TIME

Bob’s new auditing job has him frequently up in the air. This is the air over Kansas, with it’s monster farms of corn.

LIBERAL, KANSAS

Leaving Glenn L. Martin Air Terminal in a rental car towards. Liberal, Kansas, a town of 20,000, is the land of pick up trucks and Toot ‘n Totums.

FLAT LAND

This land is so flat “If your dog runs away you can watch him run for two days,” according to one of the farmers Bob talked with. Here in Liberal they drive giant tractors and honor their women with monuments.

The plaque on this statue reads:
The Pioneer Mother of Kansas
In Loving Memory Of:
With faith in God, she built a home for her family in the wilderness;
she overcame loneliness with tenderness,
she set an example for all of us by her perseverance and steadfastness.

DINING OUT

A man’s gotta eat so these trips eventually involve food eaten out. Bob usually has a good idea what his options are at his destination before he boards the plane. When he fails to find a place that serves Impossible Burgers, he goes for vegetarian-friendly Mexican restaurants. In Liberal, he found a well-earned reward at El Amigo Chavez, and a soothing mural at another place.

HOLIDAY FUN WITH FAMILY

When an opportunity to spend a week in Colorado presented itself, we jumped at the chance to see our lovely girls and their families. For more fun photos, click on: Pre-Christmas Colorado Fun

AND FRIENDS

During our twenty years along the Colorado we made many good friends, among them: Fred, Cathi, Shirley, Rob and Sharyl, and Tim and Margie. See the Pre-Christmas Colorado Fun page for more pictures.

CHICAGO

Two nights in North Carolina and Bob was off to Illinois.

HOME SUITE HOME

It’s not really home, but such a comfortable suite definitely takes some of the sting out of business travel.

THE CHICAGO RIVER

Chicago sparkles and glows at night. Very pretty.

HOLIDAY SPOT

Although Spot has retreated to the porch, he still gets to wear his holiday bow.

PITTSBORO FARMERS MARKET

Succulent lettuce, sweet carrots, and crisp hakurai salad turnips from the Thursday market. For Camille, this means salad for breakfast every day!

SUNKEN GARDENS OF MONCURE

Minuscule cauliflower, dew-laden kale,

and burgeoning broccoli, all planted as seedlings on September 9th, a bit stunted by a mid-month snow.

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:

“Children bring with them grace, patience, transcendence, second chances, rebirth and a reawakening of the love that’s in your heart and present in your home. They are God giving you another shot.” – Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run

“By degrees, over the years, the airport experience has become an extreme example of a totalitarian regime at work, making you small and suspect, depriving you of control.” – Paul Theroux in “Deep South”

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. By saying: ‘Our interests first, who cares about the others?’ we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great and what is essential: its moral values.” – French president Emmanuel Macron, November 11, 2018
