Business travel is more boring than fun, but Bob does a good job of finding pleasure on the road. This month his travels took him to Chicago, Atlanta, SW Minnesota, and Calgary – December, 2019
ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO
Bob proves that business and culture most certainly do mix with a visit to one of the country’s top art museums and happened upon an Andy Warhol exhibit.
MAO
Larger than life with blue eye shadow, Warhol’s Mao smiles from his very own wall. It may be worth noting that Camille’s father, ever a champion for controversial figures, kept a large portrait of Mao (not Warhol’s version) on the wall behind his desk at Shippensburg University.
OLD AND OLDER
Time is a construct. Hearing Elvis on the oldies station while tootling down the Moncure Pittsboro feels like a trip to the way back territories until you encounter a 5,000-year-old jade burial prism.
PRIMAL
Georgia O’Keeffe’s sensual desert tones
WILD AND WOOLLY
Van Goh’s The Drinkers and Ivan Albright’s Dorian Gray
POINTILLISM
Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte
ICONIC
Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, and Grant Wood’s American Gothic
HORSES
A detail from Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Chariot Race, and Carlo Carrà’s Horsemen of the Apocalypse
CHICAGO
Bob took the Blue Line in from O’Hare and landed in a room in the Theatre District next to the CIBC Theatre.
SIMPLE PLEASURES
Chicago pizza and Atlanta fish fingers.
ATLANTA
Bob’s room had a view of the Peachtree Towers in downtown, Atlanta.
MINNESOTA
The glamorous side of an airport layover after midnight plus snow-frosted vistas equal Business Travel at its finest.
CALGARY AND COLORADO
A blood-tingling sculpture in the Calgary airport, and Carter Lake outside of Loveland, Colorado from the air. Back in the early 90’s we shared many a walk around Carter lake, memories that are embodied in a pair of sandstone trivets which see daily use in our kitchen.
