BOB
AND CAMILLE AT HOME ON MAUI
July
1 through July 13, 2003
DOUGH!!!
Emily creates a loaf of bread under Camille’s watchful eye. On June 30, Emily and Molly arrived on Maui to share our new digs, spend some time on the beach and perhaps learn some new kitchen skills.
BACKYARD ANTICS
The backyard is a great place to eat boiled peanuts. Here Bob pitches peanuts at Molly who deftly fends them off with arms and legs. The rest of us took turns catching pitched peanuts in our mouths. On July fourth, we dug out the fireworks Uncle James and Father Joe left for us a couple of years ago and lit some smoke bombs to celebrate Independence Day.
STEALTH MOWER AND CRAZY CAT
Bob mows our little lawn with the rotary mower in about 5 minutes. Mowing the lawn used to take us an hour and a half at the old place. Molly plays with the new kitty, Kai. Emily, in the background, slips on her slippers for a trip into the outer regions of our living space.
THE GREAT INDOORS
Emily reads a book titled “Flip Flopping” on the couch. The temperature has dropped below 73 degrees which warrants a sweatshirt. Molly checks her email on Bob’s computer.
FUTURE MEALS
On the left grow the cucumbers and on the right grow leeks and chard. They all eventually end up in soups and salads for our dinner table.
MOLLY McCOOL
Check out Molly in these cool sunglasses!
OUR DAILY BREAD
Emily has taken over the bi-weekly chore of bread making. She baked this batch all by herself and look how nicely it came out! When she bakes, she makes a big loaf for sandwiches and a baguette to eat with dinner.
PICNIC LUNCH
On Friday, July 11 (Uncle James’ birthday) Bob took everyone to the beach. We brought lunch, our snorkeling gear and the boogie board. We ate and then all swam out to the reef in our masks and fins (except for Emily who swam barefooted.) After a good look at the reef and it’s many inhabitants, I lay on the beach and read while Bob pushed the girls on the boogie board.
The Eurasian Tree Sparrows hopped around on our stuff looking for bits of food. I snapped a photo of a young sparrow waiting patiently, beak parted, for his parents to find him a tidbit. When the birds were finished investigating our camp, they flew off, leaving a small token of their appreciation behind which I dutifully wiped off our drinks cooler.
GRAND ENTRANCE
The yard bunny that Mom gave us guards the entrance of our home. He likes to hang out beside a pot of pretty pink vinca. Together they make a cheery pair.
OUR FRIEND, ANNA
Prepares refreshing drinks of coconut milk by cutting open green coconuts with a huge machete and inserting straws on Sunday, July 13. After we pulled some weeds, Anna hiked with us to this stream on the Pi’iholo Ranch.
A SMALL HIKE
Anna snapped this photo of us at the Pi’iholo Ranch gate. Camille is that shadowy figure standing beside Bob – that person in the ball cap. We hiked to the top of the Pi’iholo and looked around the island with the binoculars. Haleakala, in the background is busy making clouds – as per usual.
ANOTHER DAY
Another batch of cookies. Gotta have something to eat with our ice cream!
MOPIPI
Bob points out, on this global orange, the exact location of a place called Mopipi. Mopipi is located in the Kalahari in South Africa, exactly opposite of Maui on the globe.
OKLAHOMA
John brought over this extremely long stemmed rose with a heavenly fragrance and the unlikely name of Oklahoma.
We fixed it up in a vase with some ginger. No air fresheners needed at our place! Molly and Emily pose with the new arrangement and the orange Bob drew the whole world onto.
MISERY LOVES COMPANY
Within a day of Camille’s tooth extraction, Bob ran into a nasty branch while trimming the hibiscus hedge for John and cut his head.
WEDDING, HAWAIIAN STLYE
John Lee of Maui Recycling Service and Kim got married July 17 on the shoreline at Ho’okipa.
SEEDS AND ORANGES
Work around the house never ends, whether it involves planting lettuce seeds or harvesting and squeezing juice – Bob and the girls stay busy all day! We are able to make our own ‘POG’ or Passion-Orange-Guava juice from the oranges, liliquoi (passion fruit) and guava that grow around the house.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!
This year we turn 135 years old. Camille is 49, Bob will be 45, Emily 16, Amy 14 and Molly 11. To celebrate the occasion we ordered a Double Chocolate cake from the Hailimaile Bakery.
SUSPENSE!
The night before we celebrate, we stare longingly at the presents Mom sent and try to guess what they are. The next day – voila! A candle, a book and three beach towels!
WHAT BETTER WAY
To celebrate our birthday, than with a trip to the beach?
Molokini seems to be sending up smoke signals in this picture of the cloud patterns over the south shore.
AMY MAKES IT LOOK EASY
Amy makes turning out a pair of delicious loaves look as easy as one, two, three. She kneads it, scores it and bakes the most beautiful bread.
MEANWHILE…
Back at the ranch, Cookie the Wrangler hangs out with one of her equine buddies, Bobcat. On July 30, she received a new hat, silk scarf and a new pair of boots in the mail to complete the picture of professional horse wrangler and tour guide.
