BOB
AND CAMILLE AT HOME ON MAUI

TYGER
TYGER
, BURNING BRIGHT

That little Kai kitty is
growing into an impressive animal.  He is an adolescent now and his
stripes are showing boldly.  This is a good time to inform everyone
that we recently finished reading ” Life of Pi” which involved an
Indian Castaway, a tiger named Richard Parker, a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan
and 277 days at sea.

OUT OF THE CLOSET

On Sunday, October 12th, Bob
attacked the mess in the bedroom with a vengeance.  When we moved, we
threw all things for storage into this space and tried not to look at it
again.  Amazingly, the task fell fluidly into place one piece at a
time, like a puzzle and within a few hours, the bedroom had been
transformed.

THE BIG BERKEY

Camille decided to invest in a
water filter and couldn’t sign up to anything less than this this:  The
British Berkefeld water filter.  She found it in the Lehman’s
Catalog.   According to their ad men, The Big Berkey is “used
by Red Cross societies internationally and other missionary and humanitarian
organizations worldwide.” The way we saw it – What’s good enough for
the Amish is good enough for us.  Simple Rocks!

Speaking of Rocks, Bob turned
this huge centipede out of a pot and onto the blue rock out front on October
5th.  It was a least 5 inches long but we didn’t verify this while it was
wriggling or after Bob shredded it in half with his machete.

SUNRISE – OCTOBER 9

During a conversation about
incinerators for garbage, someone had the audacity to tell Camille this
month that  Maui’s sunsets would be prettier if we had more air
pollution.  We think we would rather keep our clean air and our boring sunrises and sunsets.

HEADLIGHT

When our headlight burned out
on October 16th, Bob looked it up on the internet and found that it would be
a simple job to replace it.  He bought the part and switched it out on
the 19th.

THERE IS HOPE

On October 19th, we attended a
fund raiser at the Maui Tropical Plantation for Dennis
Kucinich.  We were very impressed by his vision for a better world
and support him whole heartedly.

WINTER GARDENS

Bob snapped this picture after
dark.  The flash sure lit up the lettuce!  He has made it easy for
us to get our fill of fresh salad greens and herbs by planting this moveable
feast right outside our back door.

Here is a daylight view of the
container garden.  It is surrounded by landscaping which includes
coleus, prayer plants, ti, dracaena, ginger, night blooming jasmine and
impatiens.  The second photo is from the shared garden behind John’s
house.  These are beets which we will use in making Russian borscht and
our favorite Hungarian
recipe which involves onions, sour cream and paprika.

This is a larger view of the
shared garden.  Cucumber vines are climbing up the fence next to the
sweet potatoes.  The bed to the right sports chard and onions.

GOOD MORNING

It is 6:45 and the sun is just
reaching the top of the Pi’iholo as Camille arrives on the ranch on October
25.

A few hours later, the view to
the ocean will look like this – Lots of rolling pastures and no telephone
lines.

IT’S TIME – MAUI TIME

Time to load up another
weekly edition of Maui Time Weekly.
Bob, Shaun and Camille spent the better part of their Thursdays delivering
this weekly paper to over 200 business on Maui.  Maui Time used to be
distributed via a gas powered fleet , but beginning October 16th was be
delivered by this TDI Biodiesel
fleet.  There are over 75,000 Biodiesel miles on the odometers of these
three vehicles.

ENSHRINED

When you walk through the
front door into our home, this is what you see.  The elephants and the
ebony Madonna come from Bob’s African childhood.  We have been
harvesting roses from John’s garden while he is away.  On the counter
is a photo of Bob and Camille in a heart-shaped frame next to the loving
dove candy dish from Mom and Dad.  If you look beyond the counter into
the kitchen, you can see Camille crouching down to add something to the
compost bucket.  Her beer waits in the beautiful wine glass Bob gave
her for her birthday.

THAT DIGNIFIED LOOK

Camille finally gave in to old
age and bought a pair of reading glasses at the drugstore on October 27.
