BOB AND CAMILLE AT HOME ON MAUI
BIG BEACH
On the first day of the month, Bob took Molly to Makena State Park’s Big Beach for a swim.
THE WAVE DANCE
Molly faces Kahoolawe and does the wave dance to make the wave god to send in another huge set.
BOOGIE BOARDING
Here are a couple of young men perfecting their Boogie Board techniques.
A LONG WALK
Camille took Molly for a 5 kilometer hike on Friday, August 6 while Bob was at work. Molly obligingly stands in front of a hedge carved into the shape of a string of elephants.
We took a picture of our place from the driveway into the old Haleakala Dairy just up the hill from the elephant hedge. Our home is about three quarters of a mile away (as the mynah) flies across the pastures.
WHICH CAME FIRST?
The vine or the tank? The vine seems to be growing out of the tip of this tank but I’d guess there were vines here before the tank showed up.
BUCOLIC TRANQUILITY
We made these steers uneasy for a few moments, but after we left they resumed their placid rumination.
TREE CO SYSTEM
We nearly couldn’t see the tree beneath its heavy coat of night-blooming cereus.
COMPOST
On the 15th, Bob opened up the compost pile and moved it to an adjacent spot to finish cooking while we begin creating a new one in its place.
HAIRCUT
Bob gave Camille her quarterly haircut on the 16th. Bob has been the only person to cut Camille’s hair since 1997 when she streamlined this aspect of her life for their trip to Belize. At that time, she gave away her blow dryer and curling iron and stopped seeing her cosmetologist.
LABOR OF LOVE
Bob started it and Camille kept it up. Together they took a sprawling tangle of hibiscus at Aloha Recycling and reined it in; turning it into a nice, thick hedge.
INCOMING GLASS
Aloha Glass Recycling receives between 250 and 300 tons of recycled glass each month. Here is what it looks like before Carner and Roby sort out the garbage.
PARTY AT THE BEACH
Maui Recycling Service hosted a beach party at Kamaole Beach Park on the 21st in honor of Ruben Ortiz’s 10 years of service with the company. For more on this story, go to Ruben’s Party.
FULL MOON RISING
The full moon was only three days away when Camille caught this picture of it rising during sunset. She hadn’t figured out which software to use for erasing the power lines at the time of this update but will consider replacing this photo with a nicer version at a later date.
BIODIESEL KEEPS OUR ENGINE CLEAN
Bob took a look at the Bio Pod’s fuel injection system on the 29th to see how it was wearing. He was pleasantly surprised to see just how clean it was after 40,000 miles of pure, clean, biodiesel.
MEANWHILE
Cookie went for a walk while Bob worked on the car. He caught up with her on Kealaloa Avenue when he took the car out for a test drive.
BROMELIAD MAN
When Camille reached home, she found Bob immersed in the repotting of our many bromeliads.
SIGNS OF THE TIMES
Nearly every street corner and private home has at least one political sign in anticipation of the upcoming elections. The property at 605 Makawao Avenue belongs to a particularly involved homeowner.
Quote of the Month:
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” – from Eisenhower’s Cross of Iron Address April 1953
