BOB
AND CAMILLE AT HOME ON MAUI

SPRING WEDDING

We started the
month by attending a wedding in beautiful Iao (EEE Yow) Valley.

MOTHER’S DAY

Pamela snapped
this photo of Blackie on Mother’s Day.  She and Shaun are enjoying the
addition of these two rascals to their household.

SURE CURE FOR
BOREDOM

The little boy
is a very handsome devil and he seems to know this.  The kittens were
born a week after Pamela’s knee surgery, providing her with a decent
distraction to what might have been a boring recovery.

INSIDE AND OUT

The little
girl has more stripes in her coat than her brother.  Blackie’s
companion, Steve, seems bored with babysitting on the kitten’s first day
outside.  Blackie keeps a wide open eye out for danger as the kittens
wade around in the grass.

TIDDLEY
WINKING

In preparation
for Camille’s 50th birthday, Bob has already begun showering her with
gifts.  Among them, this set of Tiddley Winks is proving to be a great
deal of fun.

We play on
this silk prayer mat from Saudia Arabia.  Bob has had this interesting
piece of art for many years.  Camille is fond of the camels.

BLAST FROM THE
PAST

We couldn’t
resist adding this archived photo of Camille in China from October
1998.  True to form, she had taken advantage of the situation and
gotten away with something.  When Bob handed the camel handler payment
for Camille’s ride, she took her hand off the camel’s lead chain for a
moment. Camille seized the opportunity to see whether camels respond to the
same cues as horses,  turned the camel around and headed off across the
parking lot.  This photo was snapped after the poor handler had run
over and regained control of her animal.

ISLAND STYLE

This is a
common sight in Hawaii.  Big people riding in the wrong end of a pick
up bed.  We are amazed that more people don’t break the locks on the
tailgate and fall out.  Where we came from, the safest and most
comfortable way to ride in a pick up truck was up against the cab, sheltered
from the wind.  We can’t help but wonder how many bugs these island
style riders end up with in their hair and teeth.

People
actually seem to prefer riding in the back regardless of  whether there
is room for them in the cab.  We recently saw two huge women riding up
against the tailgate while the driver sat alone up front.

BACKYARD

On May 18,
Camille mowed the backyard with our silent rotary mower.  The lawn,
which was quite sparse when we moved in last May has responded in
spectacular fashion to this wonderfully wet year.

THE SAME YARD

 This is
what the yard looked like when we moved in May 18, 2003 after a series of
dry years.

SUNDAY WALK

 Kahakuloa
Head from Makawao on a Sunday morning.

The
agapanthus are in bloom alongside this tidy Makawao yard.

These
two pictures also caught Camille’s eye on her walk to the Post Office May
23rd.

POTATO TOWERS

Meanwhile,
back in the garden, Bob had fashioned potato towers from cardboard and old
fencing.

WITH
OR WITHOUT

This
is our view of the old Haleakala Dairy pastures from our house complete with
power lines.

This
is our view without the power lines.  It amazes us how well our brains
screen out unwanted information.  When we gaze across the street, we
seldom see the power lines.  But pictures don’t lie and when we
photograph a particularly pleasing scene they seem to be everywhere.

SOMEONE
BOUGHT A NEW CAR

On
May 25th, Willie and Annie Nelson picked up their new Mercedes at the dock
and drove it directly to Pacific Biodiesel for their first fill.  Bob
King caught Bob in the act of applying the company  bumper
sticker while Willie smiles for the camera

LYCHEES
IN THE SUN

We
were home before noon after our little Memorial Day getaway and found it to
be just as beautiful Upcountry as it was in South Maui.  The lychee
tree in our backyard is heavy with ripening fruit.

last day of the month.
