Visiting the Armentrouts

May 26, 2008

TICKY, BABE, AND BOB

While we were visiting Mark (also known as Babe) and Catherine of Armentrout Path, Mark’s older brother Ticky stopped by. Mark is 85 years old and his brother is 93, all told, 227 years of Arm(a)(e)ntrouts! Commissioner candidate, Lyle M Armentrout, is also related.

MELVIN AFTER A DAY OF PUTTING UP HAY

Melvin and Betty Armentrout farm this beautiful piece of land. We first met both families in 1996 when on a genealogy excursion. Turns out Melvin and  Bob both own a copy of “Armentrout Family History 1739 – 1978.” When they get together, they get out their books and delve into the family history together.

A HAY FIELD TO BE PROUD OF

This picture of Melvin and Betty’s hay fields takes my breath away and makes us consider moving to the Shenandoah Valley. That’s Massanutten Mountain in the distance.

A CAVERN DISCOVERED BY ARMENTROUTS

We stayed at a bed and breakfast near a cavern that was discovered by Bob’s distant relatives. It was really neat to see him traipsing the woods across ground trod by his ancestors.

THE CHURCH AND THE CEMETERY

HERE LIES PHILLIP ARMENTROUT

JOAB, PHILLIP AND MARGRET

Joab, on the left, is Mark’s ancestor. Bob and Melvin both come from the Phillip/Margret line. The family origins trace back to a woman who came over from Germany with her children, settled in Pennsylvania and later moved south to the Shenandoah Valley.

ARMENTROUT PATH

Even the streets are Armentrouts in this area outside of Keezletown where the church and cemetery are.

We were impressed by the beautiful artwork on this headstone.
