Sunken Garden Update

SUNKEN GARDEN UPDATE

Bob’s labor of love and Camille’s inspiration

May, 2010

FLOURISHING

Bob’s amazing garden shows significant growth between May 2nd and May 26th. When Bob and Camille walk through the garden together, he sees work to be done and she imagines meals to create.

OBSERVATION DECK

We love our big back porch for the views and for the comfy places from which to gaze at those views.

RAIN, RAIN

It rained a lot this month. Here’s what one rainstorm in particular looked like from inside the kitchen and from outside the back hallway.

BIG BEET HARVEST

We love beets!  Bob pulled bodacious amounts of two varieties, Cylindra on the left and Detroit on the right.

PACKING OPERATION

Then he set up a processing line to wash the beets and the greens.

PICKLED BEETS

Camille took it from there, cooking up the beets for pickling and braising the greens.

HOLY SHIITAKE!

What a difference four days makes! Once mushrooms begin to fruit, they come on fast. Bob coerced these logs to bear fruit by banging them on the ground, submerging them in water and housing them in our shower where he could spray them down often.  We’ve had the log on the right for more than two years.

A WELL-TRAVELED LOG

This log has frequent flier miles, as Camille heard Bob say the other day. Here it is in Washington State in November of 2007 with Camille posing as the log lady and two and a half years later with its flush of shiitakes.

FOOD ART

Okay, just one more picture of this beautiful and prolific shiitake log!
