YODA BABY

Charity and Jason
brought young Josiah into the world on January 31st. Brother John took his photo
at 5 days of age. To Camille, Josiah seems a lot older than five days so she
dubbed him the Yoda Baby. In comparison, here’s a picture of Camille, taken by
her father John when she was four weeks old. As you can see, she has not yet
started cracking jokes and solving math problems.

FEBRUARY
PROJECTS

Bob planted seeds.
Camille made an afghan. It was that kind of month.

FARM TO
TOOTHPICK

Our wonderful next
door neighbors grew these colorful daikon radishes which we soon enjoyed (with
our neighbors) in the form of pan fried ‘steaks.’ Guess who’s holding the fish
platter full of daikon steaks.

MOVEABLE
FEAST

One morning
Camille looked out the window and saw a vulture land in the front yard. This was
unusual but made sense once she realized that there was some road kill buffet
going on. Garth had just stopped by so he and Camille walked out to see what was
on the menu, hoping it wasn’t someone’s pet.

We were relieved
to find no dead pet. Never one to leave good enough alone, Camille decided to
move the buzzard’s brunch down the road a ways. Garth obligingly snapped a
picture of this grisly piece of business.

NEW
NEIGHBOR

Olivia moved in
next door and joined us for dinner and some world class Crokinole.

INSIDE
LOOKING OUTSIDE AND VICE VERSA

Jason, Haruka and
Garth have labored long and hard to build a root cellar. Here it is in its final
stages of completion.

RED CLAY

A tarp covers the
roof of the root cellar but will soon be replaced by a waterproof membrane and
buried with the red clay they dug out to make the hole. Here is a picture of
that hole from February a year ago.

DAFFODIL
WEATHER

When the weather
is this great, there’s only one thing to do. Sit down and enjoy it. Amy gets
some kitty time in Haruka’s yard while the daffodills catch the sun. She’s
wearing her walking-through-the-woods boots.

CAPRICIOUS
WEATHER

The weather this
February was unseasonably warm one day and below freezing the next. Spot got to
wear a light blanket of snow for most of one day.

OF
TADPOLES AND MEN

There’s always
something neat to see on a walk through the woods. Check out Walking the Trails February 2012

A TRIP TO
YONDER

Bob, Amy, Garth,
Molly and Shane drove to Asheville for two nights of music and hotel revelry.
Unbearable laughter ensued, to the point that Garth had to say, "Don’t say
that!"

RIVERBEND
MALT HOUSE

While in
Asheville, Bob accepted an invitation to visit with Brian and Brent who are in
the business of supplying local brewers with local malt.

A DAY TO
BE OUT

At one point
during this ride, there were seven riders on the trails beyond Abeyance. More
pictures here: Riding NC 2012

CAPTIVATED

Xiao Hu, Bing
Ching and Paul of  Piedmont Biofuels made an enzymatic batch of fuel in the
BioPro in Bob’s biofuels lab at Central Carolina Community College.

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:

pharmaceutical marketing is that you have to “create need” to expand the
market." – Christopher Lane from his interview with the Sun Magazine

sign that there is still life in you." – Dag Hammarskjöld

"This unusual and highly
successful species spends a great deal of time examining his higher motives and
