WEAVER STREET’S FOOD HOUSE IN HILLSBOROUGH
Bob visited this big kitchen as part of a cooperative cafe workshop he attended in Raleigh.
DUCKA, SALLY AND MADRIGAL
Camille has been sharing Ducka’s wonderful world of horses and dog. Here Ducka gives Sally a laser treatment to help heal a tender foot. When she was done with Sally, Ducka turned her attentions to the brawler’s bump on Camille’s right hand with good results. Her mastiff, Madrigal has a heart as big as a barn.
HARD AT IT
Nice weather calls for action! Garth helped Bob expand the vegetable garden while Camille concentrated on the landscaping.
ASPARAGUY DELECTI
It’s asparagus season and we’ve been eating it with nearly every meal! Camille caught Jason and Haruka working in the asparagus fields on the moody Sunday morning before Trail Crawl. More at: Spring Farm and Garden
NICE AND NAUGHTY
Asami flew from Japan to visit Haruka and joined in on the neighborhood doings. Morgan has moved into Casa Blanca next door to share Robert’s apartment.
SPRING FEVER STRIKES THE NEIGHBORHOOD
This month, we spent most of our social time enjoying the great outdoors. We went on a long walk with Asami and the rest of the gang and enjoyed the first ever potluck brunch on the foundation of Lyle and Tami’s new home. See more here: Springtime with Neighbors
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Amy packed up and moved to Asheville this month on an appropriately wet and dreary day.
TRAIL CRAWL
An annual excuse to walk, eat, drink and visit with our neighbors across the creek, Tami started the tradition of Trail Crawl fourteen years ago. Stops two and three of four are pictured above. For more pictures of this happy day, please go to: Trail Crawl
DOGWOOD
The snowy blooms of the dogwood speckle the woods with fairy dust.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST – IRIS AND POISON IVY
Camille arranged iris, dogwood and redbud to brighten up our back porch for Trail Crawl. Shane’s arms are covered with angry ivy blisters from working to free a fenceline from a tangle of old vines. Click on the photo for a closer look.
GOTTA HAND IT TO OUR NEIGHBORS
They sure know how to use their hands! They are always up to something, staying busy all day every day. Jason shows off his paint stained hands and Haruka shows off her new Spring tan from working in the fields. They are hands down a most productive pair.
WORLD CAFE
On the last day of the month, Bob facilitated a brainstorming session about our local grocery coop. The thoughts were flying in earnest and a lot was accomplished. More on this at: World Cafe
THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:
“As environmental crises worsen and it becomes ever more obvious that capitalism and, more broadly, industrial civilization are killing the planet, more and more people will search for false solutions to these crises, solutions that will allow them to feel good about themselves while this culture’s global -scale exploitation and destructiveness continue.” – Derrick Jensen from Bright Green Reality Check in the November/December 2011 issue of Orion Magazine
“How can you say, “No more drilling for oil,” when you’re drinking coffee from a paper cup with a plastic lid that you’re going to throw away?” – Julia Butterfly Hill from her interview in the April 2012 issue of The Sun Magazine
“We put our kids to fifteen years of quick-cut advertising, passive television watching and sadistic video games, and we expect to see emerge a new generation of calm, compassionate, and engaged human beings?” – Sidney Poitier from his book The Measure of a Man
“Culturally, what we are witnessing in the phenomenon of the neohipster is pattern exhaustion, which paleoanthropologists define as that moment in Stone Age societies when the patterns on pottery no longer advance. Instead, old patterns are recycled.” – Christopher Ketcham from his essay The Reign of the One Percenters in the November/December 2011 issue of Orion Magazine
