ANNUAL
TRIP CONTINUED
June, 2011
IN OUR
LAST EPISODE
Our annual trip
north to visit family and friends began last month with a visit to the
Armentrouts in Shenandoah Valley, the Illos in Pennsylvania and New York and
other people and places. Here’s the link: Annual Trip North – May, 2011
NEW YORK
CITY
There’s nothing
like getting close to the water. Especially waters you grew up near as in
the case of Long Island Sound where Camille spent her formative years.
This was Bob and Camille’s first trip to New York together and it was a great
visit. More photos here: New York City – June 2011
MUSEUM OF
NATURAL HISTORY – AN INDULGENCE
We had a loosely
constructed list of must dos, nice to dos and want to dos while in New York
City, but the American Museum of Natural History was at the top. Again, a trip
down memory lane for Camille who often went here as a child, the museum did not
disappoint. Check out the pictures we took on this page: Bob
and Camille visit the American Museum of Natural History
VIEW FROM
A TRAIN
After two nights
in New York, we boarded the Amtrak, this time opting for the “Quiet
Car” and rode it back to Union Station in Washington DC.
NEVER
FORGET
This is a
beautifully carved memorial to Christopher Columbus outside Union Station.
It struck us as odd that they would have carved the likeness of an American
Indian into a memorial with the words “To the memory of Christopher
Columbus whose high faith and indomitable courage gave to mankind a new
world.”
We wondered how
the white man might feel should the shoe be on the other foot. As in, here
we are living our lives the best way we know how and along come some new peole
who basically wipe us out with their guns, germs and steel. After which,
they take over our land, move the remaining 20% to reservations and congratulate
themselves for creating a new world. And then they carve our likeness onto
the memorial as if we were in agreement that the old world we had made needed to
be recreated into a new world.
I SEE
Its hard to deny
the absolute beauty of the Capital Building. Empire can be a glorious
thing.
GOLDEN
HOUR
After sitting on
the train for three and a half hours, it felt great to stretch our legs and
since it was coming on golden hour, the views were spectacular.
OOPSY
Don’t run over the
pedestrian….sign. Obviously it happens. Ned, Bob and Camille
thought this warranted a picture. A warning, as you will, of what can
happen when you are not paying attention. We hope no animals were harmed
in the making of this picture.
BROOKSIDE
There is no better
way to indulge Camille on her birthday than to take her for a long walk.
Check out our impressions of: Brookside Gardens
DINNER AND
DESSERT
Jessica and Ned
joined Camille and Bob (behind the camera) for dinner to celebrate Camille’s
birthday. After which we went out for ice cream at a place close to
Jessica and Frankie’s home.
CAPITAL
BIKESHARE
Another great
idea, brought to our attention by Jessica who along with her husband, Frankie
showed us the zip car last year. With Bikeshare, you unlock any bike from
designated bike racks and ride it wherever you wish, leaving it locked into
another Capitol Bikeshare rack when you are finished. Camille tried one
out and they are sweet!
PONIES BY
THE SEA
Bob booked us a
night on Chincoteague where we were able to observe wild ponies and seagulls,
living in harmony.
NEVER GROW
OLD
Camille loves
ponies. Always has and always will. Bob, smart man that he is, chose
the hotel next to a paddock of mares and foals, much to Camille’s delight.
SCRATCHING
THE ITCH
This precocious
filly used the creep fence to avail herself of human attention. With her
mother on the other side, she enticed this human with her cute pony looks.
Resistance was futile. Before she knew it, Camille was massaging the tiny
muscles beneath that baby soft coat until the itch was subdued and the fingers
were black.
