COZY
INSIDE WITH OUR FRIENDS
Potluckers grace
our home often and bring warmth with them. This picture of Adam with Spot
was taken because it was Adam’s first visit to Trouts Farm.
MORE FIRST
TIME VISITORS
Dave, Rebekah and
Stephen joined us for potluck and humored us by posing with our yard art.
A LONG
WINTER
Seems like a long
winter this year but the fact that this snow melted the next day was
encouraging.
MID-MONTH SNOW
IN FORTY-NINE STATES
Brother Joe took
this picture of Nana’s house in New Jersey about the same time Spot got another
blanket of snow. Snow fell in forty nine of the fifty United
States.
LET’S FACE
IT
We’d be very
lonely without our neighbors. Jason brought his Mardi Gras mask over to
show us. Haruka gave Camille a beauty treatment.
VALENTINE’S
DAY
They say the way
to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So Camille cooked a time tested
favorite meal for Bob. She made mashed
potatoes, golden gravy, deep fried breaded seitan cutlets and steamed greens
seasoned with tamari, lemon juice and toasted sesame oil.
The chocolate beet cake with
“love crème” also known as mayonnaise was a first. Bob came
across the recipe on Alternet
and was immediately drawn to it because of the inclusion of mayonnaise. The topping is cool whip
colored with beet juice. Everything but the cool whip is vegan.
SETTING UP
A GAME ROOM
Soon Tuesday
nights will be games night at the Mill, thanks to the efforts of Greg, Carol and many
more. Greg, Curtiss and Mark wrestle with a new ping pong table
assembly. Arlo and Giles got after the foosball.
HARD
WORKING FOLK
We like to think
we don’t work very hard these days but photos like these belie that
assumption. Bob is still
working to clear the sidewalk around the largest in-ground container garden
(what was once a swimming pool), one shovel-full at a time. Camille mixed up sixteen and a half
pounds of an pan dough for crop mob and spent her Sunday morning making An Pan –
baked buns with sweetened adzuki bean paste filling.
SPOT LOVES
COMPANY
Sometimes our
friends come to us by day as in the case of Lisa and Evan. Lisa, of
Laughing Stock Farm just down the road, often comes over to spend time with
Camille. They generally end up in the kitchen. Evan, of Yokayo
Biofuels came to town to connect with the Piedmont Biodiesel design team and
spent the night at Trouts Farm.
RICE PADDY
MAKING CROP MOB AT EDIBLE EARTHSCAPES
Bob captured
the tranquility of the rice paddies before nearly a hundred volunteers descended
upon Edible
Earthscapes, the farm next door. They came to build new rice paddies across an acre of land. Camille caught the
glint of setting sun on the nearly finished project. Rice Paddy Making Crop Mob at Edible Earthscapes
THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:
“The real measure of your
wealth is how much you’d be worth if you lost all your money.” – unknown
“Washington has a lot of
money. It has trillions for war, but no money for housing. Money for war, but no
money for health care. Money for war, but no money for education. Money for war
– no money to rebuild our cities. No money to create jobs, but money for
war.” – Dennis Kucinich http://kucinich.us/
“Instead of depending on
slave labor abroad, we can have jobs at home for the things we need, not the
things we are told to want. Instead of processed food, we can have fresh
food, Instead of militarism, cooperation.” – Christopher Ketcham from
“The Curse of Bigness” in March/April 2010 Orion
