JUNE
BIRTHDAYS

Camille celebrated
her fifty-sixth birthday on June fourth.  She took her obligatory birthday
portrait and cooked her favorite meal, a vegan version of turkey
tetrazzini.  Click on the pictures to view the  larger versions of
these pictures.

Just four days
later, our friend Stephanie celebrates her fortieth birthday in Belize.
Some people really know how to live!

RECYCLED
WATER TOUR

Bob and Andy
toured the recycled water project at Lake Jordan Business Center on June 3rd.

BEAUTIFUL
AND AMUSING

The grounds
watered by the recycled water are lush.  We found the sign over the urinal
to be amusing on several levels.  First, neither of us have ever considered
drinking water from a toilet or urinal and second, in our culture it’s
considered normal to pee and poo in drinking water.

OUT FOR A
STROLL

On the first
weekend of June, Cookie uses a stick to break up spider webs on a walk through
the woods which culminated at the rice paddies.

BLUE SKY
DAY

This was one of
those stellar days and Bob took full advantage by bringing the camera along on
our walk.

HAPPY RICE

Jason, Haruka,
Devin and Holden worked extremely this season to put in rice, asparagus and new
beds of onions and potatoes.  Their efforts are paying off as these tiny
rice plants reach for the sky.

WHERE’S
SPOT?

Find the zebra in
this picture.  Bob snapped this photo from the side of the fence by the
road.  At some point, we are going to eradicate the honeysuckle vine and
plant a hedge.  Meanwhile, we are happy to use the vines as a buffer
between house and road.

We are also
enjoying the many beautiful flowers that continually pop up and bloom, thanks to
the former owners of our property.  Spot seems a bit nervous about these
wild looking Red Hot Pokers.

CHILLING

Bob took this
photo of the air conditioning chiller.  The only thing between it and us is
a thin filter.  Pretty scary stuff.

SUNDOWN

There’s nothing
prettier than our yard at the end of the day with the sun setting behind the
Leyland Cypress and lighting up the trunks of the Poplars.

BEST
GARDEN YET

Bob has been
gardening for a lot of years and feels that this year’s garden is his best
ever.  The extraordinary harvests and sheer beauty give testament to his
claim.  Check out more pictures of our yard, garden and kitchen on this

Better Food and Gardens

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:

“Somehow this most elemental
of activities – figuring our what to eat – has come to require a remarkable
amount of expert help.” – Michael Pollan

“But food safety isn’t the
number-one reason for changing the food system. I think the environmental
destruction, the inhumanity to animals, and the lack of nutrients in the food
being produced are ultimately more comellling arguments.” – Sandor Katx

When industrial polutants finally
make the air unbreathale, we will be advised to cover the cities over with
plastic domes and aid-condition them. Tehnological optimism is the snake oil of
urban industrialism. – Theodore Roszak
