A SWEET
SIXTEEN YEARS
Bob and Camille
promised each other a great life together sixteen years ago and have been
showing each other a good time ever since.
PHISHING
WITH OUR FRIENDS
Sometimes we get
out. This was our first Phish
concert and we had a fabulous evening. Check out: Phishing in Raleigh
ZEBRAS CAN
CHANGE THEIR STRIPES
With a little help
from their friends, of course. See more pictures of this artistic
enterprise here: Painting Spot
THE GOOD
LIFE
We’ve settled down
in a great place with great friends and great food. Good gravy – what more
can we say? We love our life and our “poor little vegan” diet which often includes
gravy. On this evening we also ate Russian Banana fingerling potatoes with
parsley and chives from our garden. Candied carrots, also from our garden
and home made deep fried seitan cutlets and golden gravy rounded out the meal. Yum!
NEW TO THE
NEIGHBORHOOD
Little Linus, the
new addition to the neighborhood came to dinner with his momma and papa, Rachel
and Scott. Sam and McCayne will soon be moving to the neighborhood as
well. Spot is jazzed!
OLD
FRIEND, NEW FRIEND
Tim stopped by
with his cute dog Eli on his way to the beach. He lived in our house not
that long ago but has since moved away. Seth is living at David’s just a
couple of doors down and
apprentices at Mark Hewitt
Pottery. Spot was proud to have his picture taken
with Tim, Eli and Seth.
FLOURISHING
There’s a lot
going on in our yard between the birds, bees and butterflies. There is so
much food in the garden that every day is harvest day. Jeremy came by and helped Bob
pull carrots and dig potatoes. Then they sat down and washed them up before bringing them
into the house. Our yard and gardens are a labor of love. We’ve
posted more pictures on this page: Trouts Farm Yard and Gardens – A Labor of Love
A LITTLE
BARN TIME
Camille hadn’t
ridden since last October until her friend Lisa invited her over to ride.
Joe is the cutest grey pony and Turbo is a handsome bay thoroughbred.
Spec, the pony Camille rode on this day is missing from these pictures but was featured in May on a page called Lisa’s
Ponies.
YES WE CAN
Jeremy and Jenny
expressed an interest in learning to can, so we all made a plan and each bought
peaches, then dove right in and canned them one fine Saturday. For more photos, go to: Putting Summer in a jar
HA’OLE
LU’AU
Karen and Lloyd
are taking a giant leap off the mainland and will land in Hilo. They threw
a little lu’au party at Chatham Marketplace and we all dressed up and brought
something to share.
PIPER
METHYSTICUM
Bob brought kava,
a nasty tasting drink made from a pepper root
which acts as a relaxant. On Maui you can belly up to the bar at Wow
Wee and drink kava to your heart’s content. Lloyd was game and drank his bowl of
kava
straight away as did Mary Beth.
FANCY
FOOTWEAR
Karen wore some
very interesting shoes. We all did our best to dress for a luau.
Camille wore a dress Bob bought her for her birthday several years ago.
Bob wore a Hawai’ian shirt, just like usual.
WEEKLY
POTLUCK
This week was a
big one with fifteen happy mouths all eating, drinking and talking story.
Camille was happy that Mary Beth was in town to milk Lisa’s sheep while Lisa is
at the beach. Mary Beth used to live at Lisa’s place which is just a
couple of miles up the road.
BIRTHDAY
GIRL
Rachel’s birthday
happened to fall on a Thursday, which is potluck night. So we baked a
chocolate cake, Mary Beth lit the candles and took it over to the living room
where Rachel was sitting with McCayne. Seth kept the flames from blowing
out. Rachel will get her wish because she blew the candles out in one
breath. We were careful not to overload the cake with candles because last
week there were so many flames on Jason’s cake he ran out of breath.
IRREPRESSIBLE
LIFE
Rachel and Scott
have brought new life to the neighborhood. Tami enjoys playing with little
Linus at potluck. Life is where you find it and on a trip to Lowes, Bob
looked up to see a plant growing out of a bag of compost. It tickled us to
see irrepressible life pushing its way through the shrink wrap.
THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:
“Cooking is universal among
our species. No explorer ever found a human society that did not
cook. Cooking is more unequivocally characteristic of our species than
language.” – Alfred W.
Crosby from his book “Children of the Sun – A
History of Humanity’s Unappeasable Appetite for Energy”
“A potato is just a potato
until people sweating over belt lines and giant fryers turn it into Tater
Tots.” – Joe Bageant from “Waltzing
at the Doomsday Ball”
“The canned goods that I buy
at the store ain’t got the summer in ’em anymore” – Greg
Brown from his song, Canned Goods
