BOB
AND CAMILLE AT HOME ON MAUI
AT THE END OF THE MONTH
This is all we had to show for
the very entertaining month of September – 4 pounds of trash in front and 47
pounds of recycling behind it for a total of 51 pounds. The compost
can and the worms took care of the rest. We’ve trimmed 20 pounds out
of our glass by brewing beer in re-useable bottles (a 38% reduction in
glass) and cut our paper by 14 pounds since last May. At this rate, we
are sending less than three 32-gallon cans of garbage to the landfill a
year. That’s less than half a cubic yard. Our total generated
waste, including compost and recycling, fills two 32-gallon cans per month
and weighs between 110 and 150 pounds.
BOB’S 44TH BIRTHDAY
Here are most of Bob’s
presents and a very special dinner of our favorite Bocca Chicken Patties,
mashed potatoes, gravy and peas. Does this man look excited, or
what? Well, it isn’t every day you turn 44. Bob happens to be
wearing a tee shirt he bought in the Caribbean and standing in front of a
photo of us playing in a waterfall in Belize just 5 years ago.
After dinner (can you say
Clean Plate Club?) eaten while watching Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry
Lyndon” on DVD, we lit the candles and had cake and ice cream.
Life doesn’t get any better than this!
A NEW PATH
It looks like Bob has been out
with his machete, again! He spent a couple of hours carving this path
from the house to the garden. It winds around the old outhouse and
through the vines and cane grass.
TWO CANE FIRES
Sugar cane is a big industry
on Maui. When it comes time to harvest, the whole field is set on fire
to burn away the unwanted leaves, The stalks are then collected and
processed into sugar. The photo on the left was taken from our
yard on September 23rd and the one on the right was taken from Pukalani two
years ago. The first time we saw a cane fire, we were driving into
town for one of Bob’s first days of work with the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve
Commission. We thought that a bomb had been exploded on Kahoolawe!
It sure looked like a nuclear blast to us. A couple of weeks ago, we
drove through the smoke from a cane fire and it was frightening to hear the
crackle of the flames as we choked on the smoke filled air.
Apparently, residents are not notified when a field is to be burned.
We’re thankful we live above the fields.
MOON SETTING AT SUNRISE
What a pretty sight to see the
moon setting over West Maui first thing in the morning on September 20th.
PLANTING A SEED
Bob, busy in the garden on
September 15th.
UPCOUNTRY WEDDING
Volker Weiss wed Julienne
Hurst at Silver Cloud Ranch on September 8th. We met Volker in
China. He was the Food and Beverage Manager for The Hyatt, our home
for 6 months. He provided us with good conversation during those long
winter evenings and later shared his friends on Guam with us.
Bob and Camille took time
before the ceremony to sit and enjoy the view and pet the miniature horses.
Volker was a little nervous
before the wedding but it looks like it was worth it after all was said and
done.
Jules decorated the champagne
box with shells and other pretty things.
NEW ADDITIONS
Finally, we get some
pets! These handsome red wigglers, donated by Joy Webster, will dine
royally on household paper and kitchen scraps. We look forward to the
rich fertilizer they will produce in return. Bob poured them into
their new bed of shredded paper and fed them their first meal of corn husks
on September 4th.
