Knick Knacks

KNACK GALLERY

A
Wander through our Knick Knack Collection

December
12, 2003

A
couple of weeks ago, Mom told Camille that she didn’t think we had any knick
knacks.  Actually we do have quite a collection despite our many moves and
our conservative 500 feet of living space.

DO WE KEEP THEM BY THE DOOR?

The Wooing Doves candy dish
was a gift from Mom and Dad, Shirley gave us the hanging war pony, the
Chinese horse picture was a gift from Bob to Camille purchased while we were
living in China, we bought the trout salt and pepper shaker while in
Colorado and the silver heart picture frame was a gift from Karen and Bob
Nolan given to us at the time of their wedding on the island of Lanai.

ARE THEY THINGS THAT WE ADORE?

These handsome elephants and
ebony Madonna have been part of Bob’s household since he lived with his
parents in Africa during the late 60’s and early 70’s.

ARE MANY OF THEM DEER?

Thanks to Mom, we have many
beautiful deer in our collection.  This goes back to her pet name for
Camille.  Nearly every year, Mom sends a deer in one form or
another.  This year it was on a hand towel.    The
lacquered horses were given to us by Helen Tian (Tian Jing,) our
receptionist at Lucas, as we were leaving Tianjin.

DO WE LIKE TO KEEP THEM NEAR?

One of the last things we see
each day before turning out our bedside lights is our dresser spread with
mementos and photos.  There is a picture of Emily and Amy posing on a
bale of hay in our garage in Colorado about 10 years ago, African sculpture,
stone carvings from Belize, Chinese horses from Stephanie Hu (Hu Xi) and a
picture of the beach at Cozumel from our honeymoon.

DO THEY HANG UPON THE WALL?

Bob has always been drawn to
masks.  We have an eclectic collection – from the Guatemalan horse mask
to the African masks and a Chinese dragon (second from the bottom right.)

The mask on the left is a
Yoruba Gelede Headdress from Nigeria which was worn during ceremonial
dancing.  The one on the right is a modern Ghanaian mask made for art
and depicts the face of a policeman.

All
of these beautiful things serve to keep the sweet memories from the past
fresh in our minds.  Knick knacks are the heart of a household and keep
us connected to the many generous and loving people in our lives.  We
are thankful to have so many pretty trinkets in our life.
