NC RIDING – 2011
Back in the saddle, thanks to Peggy and her friends!
May, 2011 to October, 2011
BLAZING THE TRAILS DURING HUNTING SEASON – December 18
On December 18th, Sharon, Barbara and Camille did a little trail blazing over by the lake. Blaze orange is the appropriate color from September 15th through December 31st when riding or hiking these North Carolina woods. Barbara is an accomplished seamstress and sewed the blaze orange rump rug that Sharon is using on Mingo.
SEED HUNTING – October 23
Another spectacular day in which we concentrated on collecting seeds for Sharon’s nursery. Sharon and Peg each trailered two horses to Moncure to ride the trails on the west side of Gum Springs Church Road. Sharon’s horse, Sonny watches as Sharon tucks some seeds into Ming’s saddle bags.
BORROWED HORSES
Peggy brought Hailey for Barbara to ride and Sharon hauled Sonny for Camille.
SUN AND SHADE
We couldn’t believe how warm it was on this day. Warm enough that Peg is down to a tee shirt. We chose to leave the logging road as soon as possible and take the shadier route through the woods. Watching Hailey work under saddle was a treat because I was able to see what Peg sees when we ride together – specifically, the care with which Hailey picks her way over obstacles. Such a good girl she is!
SHARON
Sharon is great fun to ride with because she is always looking for the joke. The funny thing is, her horse’s name is not Joker. Barbara’s horse, who did not join us on this day is named Joker. Sharon’s long-legged steed is Mingo.
END OF THE TRAIL
Mingo relaxes after having his saddle removed. I can’t thank Sharon and Peggy enough for hauling extra horses around to beautiful places so I can ride with them. All I have to do is show up!
OUT AND ABOUT – July 30
Another lovely ride with Peg on Hailey and Simon. Harlands Creek is a beautiful place to sit and let the horses drink.
TRAIL RIDING WITH PEG – June 16
After more than a year of doing other stuff (buying a house, settling into a new community and throwing myself into the local food movement) my new friend, Peg got me back into the saddle. She loans me her mare and we ride the extensive trail system surrounding her property. Our first ride was in May of 2011.
HAILEY AND SIMON
Camille’s new friends, Hailey, a beautiful Mustang mare and her pasture buddy, Simon, a handsome Appaloosa.
