DAY TRIPPING TO CASARES
WITH CECILE AND SILVIO
July 16, 2005
A trip to the Pacific side of Nicaragua
TO DIRIAMBA
The taxi van we caught right outside Cecile and Silvio’s house took us to Diriamba. This boy, the driver’s helper, leaned out the window shouting, “Diriamba, Diriamba!” until the taxi was full.
Nearly full, but not quite. We reached 22 people in this small van.
THE MARKET AT DIRIAMBA
Lots of fresh food to see and buy here at the big market! The taxi to Casares was loaded high with groceries by the time the driver’s helper filled it with passengers.
MANY WAYS TO TRAVEL
Including this people-powered bicycle
And this three wheeled passenger van.
CASARES
It took about 40 minutes to reach the Pacific Ocean town of Casares.
Complete with pigs on the beach!
Molly poses for a snapshot.
The sky reflected the influence of Hurricane Emily.
It was our intention to walk the beach to La Boquita for something to eat and take the bus home from there. After a certain amount of deliberation, we decided to go ahead and take the walk.
THE CHALLENGE
The hardest part of our walk was the negotiation of these rocks. Silvio stood at the bottom and watched the waves. When the wave went out, we quickly stepped down into the water and around the rock on the right.
Camille and Bob
Cecile and Silvio
Silvio jumped up on these rocks to watch the crabs scurry.
Along the way, we passed a small herd of goats.
And a soccer game.
LA BOQUITA!
Finally, we achieved our goal and came upon a little beach cafe with cold beer and coca cola. In this photo, an ox cart drives down the beach in front of the cafe. For more photos of La Boquita, go to La Boquita – Animals by the Sea.
