DIGGIN’
OUR NEW DIGS
January, 2010
WELCOME!
It took us
seventeen years and fourteen moves, but we may have finally settled down.
Bob painted the front door red to symbolize our good fortune. When you
step into the house you are in the living room with its propane log
fireplace. At some point, we will replace this with a wood stove but for
now, it is cozy and welcoming.
A HUB OF
ACTIVITY – OUR KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM
This kitchen has
come a long way in a few months, thanks to the efforts of Handy
Jim. There is a photo of what this kitchen looked like last September
on Evolution of a Home.
We now have a bright, airy, easy-to-clean area perfect for potlucks and mass
production of food. This month we made beer, tempeh, seitan and lots of
cabbage dishes in our new kitchen.
The dining room
also gets a lot of use. There are often friends at our table and we are
able to seat more than a dozen by opening up a second table which stows away
neatly in a corner of the room when not in use.
THE OTHER
HUB – OUR OFFICE
The office gets a
lot of use, especially because some of the paid work we do can be done from
home. Not to mention the ten or more hours we spend each month on our
Trouts Farm Photo Album! The fireplace doors open into either the living
room or the office and sometimes both. The two best features of the office
are the windows that look out into our bird-filled front yard and the fact that
it adjoins the open space of our kitchen.
GUEST
BEDROOM
Another bright,
cheery space just waiting for guests to arrive.
THE WORK
ROOM – SPARE BEDROOM
Bob has turned
this room into an everything room. Here’s where we store all of our bulk
food including beans, rice, flour and spices. The three buckets on the bottom
row contain organic soybeans.
There are also work tables and a Tempeh-incubating cabinet but the room doesn’t
seem at all crowded. Most of our houseplants live in this room and Bob
used grow lights to start seedlings for the garden. It’s
a great place for a nap and will also serve as a second guest bedroom should the
opportunity arise.
THE HOOPTY
BATH – GUEST BATHROOM
Handy Jim and his
handy crew worked their special magic on this room. They replaced the sub
floor, rebuilt a wall, and put in new everything except the mirror, which Bob
painted green. Because it is next to the furnace, this is the warmest room
in the house – so perfect for showering that we have yet to shower in the master
bathroom.
HEAVENLY
HAVEN – OUR BEDROOM
We love to sleep,
especially in the winter. This year we splurged on a new pillow top
mattress and bedding to go with our new bedroom and are sleeping better than
ever. Our bedroom is so large that we put our recliner in the corner,
making it a great place to read, too.
MASTER
BATHROOM
This room is also
quite large, with built in linen storage, a shower. We love every room in
our new home and look forward to enjoying them for many years ahead.
