LARRY AND KAREN VISIT THE FARM

LARRY
AND KAREN VISIT THE FARM

December 23 and 24,
2011

In which we lure two
really cool people into our community with a couple of days on the farm.

SKILLS:
THEY HAVE THEM

When Jason and
Haruka heard that Karen and Larry were thinking about relocating, they invited
them to visit our community. Karen spins, weaves and knits everything from socks
to hats. And she’s into chickens. Larry is a blacksmith and a carpenter, famous
for his incredible broadfork and work with draft oxen. Please visit their Website
for more about this interesting pair. And, yes, Karen did make the socks she’s
wearing in this picture.

OKONOMIYAKI
NIGHT

One of our very
favorite meals was the primary bait in our lure. Jason and Haruka hosted
okonomiyaki night, supplying the griddle, greens, batter, sauces and nori.
Okonomiyak is a Japanese savory pizza-like pancake, grilled and topped with
sauce and nori seaweed.

THE CHEF

There is a good
bit of skill involved in cooking okonomiyaki.  No one gets them to brown
perfectly and flip without mishap like Haruka!

A TALE OF
TWO SAUCES

The pancakes are
topped with okonomiyaki sauce, which Haruka made from scratch and Japanese
Kewpie mayonnaise. We enjoyed a crisp mizuna salad with a silky tofu dressing on
the side. You can find the recipe here

CHILLIN’
AFTER DINNER

There are few
things that compare to a full belly and the company of good friends.

CAT IN A
BOX

The ever adorable
Kome relaxed through most the evening and then hopped off the ottoman to play in
the recycling box.

BEST
FRIENDS

Camille slid into
the chair with Haruka to share a good squeeze. We continually thank our good
fortune at having nestled into this wonderfully warm community.

As Karen and Larry
were leaving (with promises to return!) they showed us their dashboard mascots
Peanut and Stevie.

LITTLE
KNITTED FEET

We were amazed
that Karen was able to knit such a fine and tiny critter! Larry gave Stevie his
name because it took Karen a while to install his eyes.
