PEACE RALLY
On Saturday, October 26, Bob
and Camille joined the Maui Peace Action to show support for global protests
against a war on Iraq. The flip side of these two signs say
“Imagine Peace” and “War is Mass Murder.”

A SHORT ANTI-WAR RANT by
Camille
We joined the rally for the same reasons we protested the Vietnam and Gulf wars and will protest any war – because war is wrong.
Especially war with bombs.
Especially unprovoked war.
Those who believe this is a war on terrorism
or that we Americans are not the real terrorists
have been watching too much TV.
If you have lived overseas, you’ve had the opportunity to see Americans as the world sees us.
Gore Vidal, now 77 years old and living in Italy, put it nicely when he wrote:
“Americans have no idea of the extent of their government’s mischief
… the number of military strikes we have made unprovoked, against other
countries, since 1947 is more than 250.”
Ironically, I was infused with an unexpected sense of patriotism while
protesting the war on Iraq Saturday. I realized that while I am
disgusted with the direction America is going in, I still love my
homeland. True patriotism is about loving your country and wanting the
best for it. Gluttony, greed and terrorism is what America has come to
represent to the rest of the world. 50 years ago, we represented
freedom and the glories of capitalism. Our dream has turned into a
nightmare.
