WET MONTH
= SHIITAKE FLUSH

It rained for
weeks and brought out all kinds of mushrooms, including the logs we’d inoculated
with shiitake spores a while back.  We shared these with the neighbors and
made a nice baked tettrazzini for Bob’s birthday dinner.

JASON AND
HIS EAGLE EYE

Jason spends a
fair amount of time in the woods.  When he spied these beauties, he brought
them over so we could get a positive identification using Bob’s many mushroom
books.  Yep, they were chanterelle!  Being as how it was Bob’s
birthday, he gave us a generous portion and we ate them up!

FAIRYLAND

We went for a
stroll through the woods on the last Sunday of the month on a spectacular day
and cam across an abundance of beautiful mushrooms.  They were poppin’ out
from every nook and cranny!

PUFFBALLS?

Hard to say what
these are – their stems were round and nearly as large as their caps.  We
weren’t planning to eat these so we didn’t take the time to identify them.

COEXISTING

This is
photographic proof that shiitakes can coexist with other mushrooms.  It is
generally thought that once another mycelium takes over a plugged log, your
chances of getting a flush of edible mushrooms are slim.
