WALK
TO ABEYANCE WITH JASON AND HARUKA
There’s
nothing more fun than a walk with good friends and a destination. On this
pretty Spring morning we were headed through the woods to the nearby community
of Abeyance with our good friends and next door neighbors.

IRRIGATION
POND EXCAVATION
Our first stop was
the pond behind Jason and Haruka’s home that will be used to irrigate their Rice
Paddies. Making a pond is no small feat and big decisions must be made
regarding liners, depth and orientation to the landscape. The weather has
been quite wet, making it difficult for excavating because the machinery keeps
getting bogged down in the mud. Nevertheless, progress is being made and
we all look forward to using the pond as a swimming hole this summer.
BRIGHT AS
THE SUN
The beautiful
flowers of the Leatherleaf Mahonia or Mahonia bealei caught our eye. We
later read that it is an invasive plant.
ONION
FIELDS AND TOAD EGGS
Haruka
poses between beds of onions with her plastic bag she will use to pick up
garbage on the trail while Bob and Jason discuss crops. Potatoes and rice
will also be grown in this field. A cluster of spiraling egg-filled
tendrils floats in one of the rice paddies. The toads have been mating madly,
their voices ringing through the night.
SOURCE OF
AMUSEMENT IN ABEYANCE
Shortly after
coming out of the woods onto the paved road in Abeyance, we came across the
scene of an accident involving a truck and a tree. Bob and Jason had a
good time reconstructing the path of a dually which drove off the road, knocked
down a pine and tore up the sod. Camille and Haruka were greatly amused
watching the two discuss possible scenarios.
BUDDIES
Camille is very
lucky to have such a beautiful friend in Haruka.
DAFFODILS
As we were leaving
Abeyance and diving back down into the woods, we noticed hundreds of daffodils
in bloom. Tami told us the beautiful story behind these plants about a man
who was dying of cancer and spent his last months planting daffodils in the
woods.
CATCHING
HER FANCY
Haruka was taken
by the delicate yellow flowers of what we later found to be a Trout Lily or
Erythmonium Americanum and took this photo of the flowers. Notice her
grocery bag is now full of debris. What a good Haruka!
CAMILLE’S
FAVORITE PLACE
We took turns
posing in Camille’s favorite spot in the woods. It is a little mound which
catches the sun and invites her to come and contemplate the meaning of
life.
NEARLY
HOME
Haruka in
Camille’s spot. Bob and Jason heading for home on the Northwest Passage.
