A ROAD TRIP ACROSS THE SOUTH

November 1 through 6, 2007

 

THE FRENCH QUARTER

   

It was great that we spent November first in New Orleans because we got to see the French Quarter after a wild Halloween night.  People were still partying and one man was sleeping it off on the sidewalk by the river.  Even so, musicians - some on foot and some on bikes -  were gathering for another long evening as we headed towards our room.

 

A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT IN FLORIDA

 

Now this is just sad - Seaside, the community we had hoped was built as a shining example of New Urbanism turned out to be a playground for the rich.  The beach was off limits to the public, for one thing.

 

And, although there were sidewalks in many parts of Seaside, most of it was given over to cars.  A mile away from Seaside, we encountered this ritzy little shopping center.

 

UNSTOPPABLE

The construction of enormous hotels and casinos which dwarf the communities around them continues to amaze us.

Back to the public beach for one last look at the sun.

 

NORTH CAROLINA AT LAST!

This is the marshland at Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  We planned a night on the coast so we would get a feel for how far away the ocean is from our new home.

 

A BUSY PLACE

. 

The skippers and gulls ran in and out of the tide, catching their evening meal while fishermen lined up the dock, perhaps for the same purpose.

 

PELICANS

Ungainly on land and breath taking in flight, a flock of Pelicans catch the light of the setting sun.

 

   

Little by little the light of the day faded away.

 

Here's a secret - Camille turns into a little girl when she gets to the beach.  What's that?  You do, too?  Well, what do you know about that!
