A TRIP TO WASHINGTON DC
August 12 - 14, 2008
SUCKING DOWN FUMES
DC commuters have accepted this kind of traffic as a way of life. We country folk don't think we could do this routinely.
AT HOME IN NED'S HOUSE
Ned graciously opened his home to us for a two-night stay. Sadly, he was out of town but Iris was there. After the five hour drive, she welcomed us home with an invitation to rub her belly.
FRANKIE'S WORLD
We dropped our bags and went to Sunrise Village to visit Camille's Aunt Jeanette in Montgomery Village before driving over to Pogo Organics where Frankie runs Pogoil, their Biodiesel operation with his two interns, Amy and Tony.
All three were busily preparing for a Biodiesel workshop the next day. Amy spent the day moving a huge mound of dirt from a holding bay so they could use it for a classroom. Here she stands beside the shadow of that mound. Meanwhile, our homey, Matt and his interns Joanna and Marc were hauling the amazing clean tech facility up from Pittsboro.
Frankie took Bob and I around the property for a tour and looked at some of the products Pogo Organics is marketing. More story here: Clean Tech Goes to Pogoil
BUYING TICKETS TO THE METRO
The next day, after spending a few hours at the workshop, we picked up Rob and headed for the big city. It is always a good idea to take someone who knows their way around and Rob's parents live quite close to DC. We parked the car and Rob showed us which tickets to buy to get us through the day.
MASS TRANSPORTATION ROCKS
And rumbles and rolls, moving massive quantities of human protoplasm, hour after hour, day after day.
TOURISTS IN A WORK DAY WORLD
Bob, Camille and Rob were nearly the only tourists on the metro and we weren't taking ourselves too seriously at all.
BUTTERFLY GARDEN ON THE MALL
Watching Rob in his element is always a treat. He is a born naturalist, curious about everything, touching, tasting and learning. He reached up into the Paw Paw tree to show us its fruit.
OH NOS!
Our freedoms are shrinking!
BALL ON THE MALL
City workers bike to the mall to play softball at the end of their day.
QUADRUPED LOVE
Camille loves quadrupeds, especially horses and elephants. So we posed with this enormous stuffed African Elephant in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. She even loves extinct ones like this Triceratops we cam across on the Mall.
