CLEAN TECH GOES TO POGOIL

August 13, 2008

POGO LAND

We've been wanting to see where Frankie works and this is it - a sprawling tree removal service turned compost producer known as Pogo Organics.  On the way in, we drove past barns full of old hay, presumably for making compost and some horses.  And this pond which was built to filter wash water.

THE DAY BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

Amy had spent most of the day shoveling a pile of dirt from this shed so it could be used as a classroom the next day.  The stain from the dirt on the wall is testament to its size.  Frankie showed Bob and Camille around the place.  Here they are looking at some of Pogo's organic products.

POGO'S GARDEN

I can't remember what this pile was about but took the photo because I was drawn to the color of the greenhouse shell.  We meandered through the mushroom inoculated logs in the woods and out again into the clearing where Pogo grows corn and other delectables.

JOANNA TALKS ABOUT SAFETY

We were so proud of Joanna for getting up in front of this crowd the next day and giving a talk about safety.  She did a wonderful job and everyone learned a lot.

MOBILE BIODIESEL PLANT

Clean Tech as it has been called is a fuel plant on wheels and is quite an effective teaching tool.  Amy humored Camille by posing in her engineer's hat.  When Camille was in High School, she wore a hat like this, sparking a run on engineers caps at the local dry goods store.

FRANKIE'S WORLD

When we stepped into Frankie's Biodiesel plant, Camille immediately thought of the Paul Theroux's "The Mosquito Coast." The narrator takes his first look at the inner workings of his father's creation, an ice machine and realizes he is looking at the inside of his father's brain.

More scenes from inside Frankie's brain - a tank with a world map on it and an old, reliable pump.
