A JAUNT TO STEAMBOAT SPRINGS AND BACK

August 18-19, 2007

UP AND OVER THE GREAT DIVIDE

What a brain cleansing experience driving over the Rocky Mountains can be on a beautiful day!  These mountains are aptly named for their rocky peaks.  We drove west through the Poudre Canyon, over Cameron Pass and through Walden.  North Park is famous for its hay.

GETTING DOWN TO IT

Our big surprise was this young moose, drinking from the water beside the highway.  We were able to get a good look because the moose was more interested in drinking than running away.

Finally, the moose had enough to drink and moved off.

A FAMILY OUTING

After a tour of the landfill and a lot of talk about the business of biodiesel, our hosts, Matt and Genah decided it was time for a sunset drink.  So we all headed to town and had one.  From left to right, Genah, Aaron, Matt, Bob and Catcher, who insisted on pulling the wagon.  Our route took us past one of the springs that Steamboat is famous for.

HOME AGAIN

The sun was golden on the way back and Catcher was tired enough to allow his father to pull the wagon.

THE NEXT MORNING

We made some coffee and watched the hummingbirds at Matt and Genah's feeder.

LITHIUM SPRINGS

Then we walked over to the lithium springs and Bob was brave enough to drink some.

LEFTOVERS

We spotted this pile of bear poop looking suspiciously fresh over by the lithium springs.  Camille had walked there the previous afternoon and didn't see this pile at that time.  When we returned to the house, Genah told us she had seen a bear in their backyard shortly after we went to bed.

LOCAL ART

We kept walking and came across this fancifully decorated car - a tribute to the Lizard King.  For a closer look, click on the picture on the right.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

We kept walking and stopped to take photos of Steamboat Springs.

YAMPA RIVER

The spring flows into the Yampa River.  If we were a bear, we thought, this is where we'd be hanging out on a Sunday morning.

PARTING SHOT

As if on cue, a hot air balloon passed over the house shortly after we returned from our walk.  On that note, it was time to drive back across the Great Divide to the Airport and return to Texas.
