DRY AS THE DEVIL

Bob and Camille go for a hike in the Dry lands

April 9, 2006

THE BACKBONE

Bob chose a trail that runs alongside this interesting rock formation known as the Devil's Backbone.

YOU CAN TAKE THE MAN OUT OF THE JUNGLE,

BUT YOU CAN'T TAKE THE JUNGLE GUIDE OUT OF THE MAN

We stopped at the strategic markers along the trail and Bob read about the natural plants, animals and rock formations from a pamphlet he printed off the computer at home.

A FEW MORE VIEWS

Bob on the trail.

A piece of backbone, out standing in it's field.

Camille and what we called "The Castle."

A STRANGE ROUND ROCK

In the foreground is a round rock that once made up part of the rock formation beyond.  Click on the photo above for a closer look at similar, round eye-like rocks within the wall itself.  The formation itself is called the Keyhole and is a gateway from one side of the ridge to the other.  It was off limits on this day because it is the breeding season for the many nesting birds that live in the rocks.

WOODEN FENCES

I guess we just like the look of a wooden fence.  What more can I say?

DOUBLE DUTY

This man gets some extra exercise by carrying a youngster on his back.

CIVILIZATION

Across the valley, a gated community of incredibly large homes was springing up.  Click on the photo for a detail of this massive house.

BACK TO THE REAL WORLD...

The world of fossil fuel burning monsters like these.  Notice the yellow, plastic "support our troops" ribbon-shaped decals.  If you're going to drive something this big, you kind of have to be behind the Iraq war, don't you?

Ahhh, and gated communities, where each and every McMansion has it's own riding lawn mower, 3-car garage, plastic kid furniture and 4.5 television sets.

Isn't it a bit ironic how communities are named after something that used to be there?  In this case, Harvest Heights has supplanted the wheat fields that once were harvested here.
