Signs and Sights

Things we see on our frequent trips around Kumasi

MATTRESS WARS

ASHFOAM is one of two major mattress sellers in Kumasi, and their ads are everywhere! Both companies will pay the cost of painting their ads on homes and shops around town. We notice the ASHFOAM models lack of arms are made up by her prodigious breasts and bottom.

ROCKING THE ADS

Camille and I came upon these giant rocks that have been decorated by the competing firms. The LATEX FOAM Honeymoon rock is the size of a beached whale.

BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP

Apparently Ghanaians take their skin care seriously, and carrots play a major role. Who knew?

ODDITIES

The hair “darkner” signs is one of Bob’s favorites. He’s pretty sure that the boy and girl pictured are wearing the same wig. The DO NOT URINATE HERE sign is pretty straightforward and the wall below it looks unsullied.

TAXI WISDOM

Virtually every taxi and tro-tro (shared van) has a slogan on the back window, usually in the same squiggly font. Most of them are religious in nature, the missionaries did there job here very well. You rarely run into missionaries in Ghana anymore.

TRO-TROs GET IN ON THE ACT

The captions don’t always make sense to us….LIFE MAN?

IRONY

Camille spotted the Driving School sign while we were hopelessly stuck in traffic – as if Kumasi needed more drivers on the road. The Burger Queen sign probably refers to a local lady who spent time overseas (particularly in Germany.) These repatriated Ghanaians are known as “burgers” here.

ROUNDABOUT SCULPTURES

Kumasi has at many roundabouts (traffic circles) and each one has a sculpture in the middle. The one on the left can be found downtown in Adum – the one on the right is in Suame.
