SO – IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT FECAL SLUDGE
The Wilds of Dompoase – In which Bob walks the area looking for and photographing that nature thing.
PORCUPINES AND COCOYAM
The porcupine is the mascot of the Asante Kotoko Football Club, the Kumasi based soccer team that is last years league champion. This particular kotoko (porcupine in Twi) graces a sticker on the giant excavator that was formerly used to de-sludge the fecal sludge ponds. On the right is a volunteer cocoyam plant (aka taro) coming up through the rocks at our plant site. Bob has transplanted eight of these to our home garden where Camille will harvest the kontomire (the leaves) to make Palaver Sauce.
EGRETS, TRASH, AND JUNGLE
De-sludging is finally happening at the ponds, and the cattle egrets don’t seem to mind. On the right, Bob trained his camera directly across the road from the ponds and found a primeval jungle view. A place’s beauty Is often is just a matter of perspective
CRADLE TO GRAVE
The circle of life can be seen everywhere. Here’s a nest of a Spur-Winged Lapwing made on the ground with an egg in it as well as bones, probably belonging to a White-Faced Whistling Duck.
THE BIRDS
Lots of cattle egrets and white-faced whistling ducks call the fecal sludge ponds their home.
FS2BD PROJECT SITE
The brown metal roof is our small building sited between the ponds, as you can, see, there is beauty, even in human waste disposal.
BEAUTY IN POND SCUM?
Bob was taken by the patterns in the scum of one of the ponds, particularly in the Lagrangian Coherent Structures that can be seen in the turbulence behind the stick on the right.
