Chickens

In which the menagerie increases by eight little birds with Jeremy’s fulfillment of his third goal in the garden/goat/chicken trilogy.

YOU BROUGHT HOME A BOX OF WHAT?

Jeremy presents Camille with an new addition to Casa Kumasi on October 8th – a box of chickens!

MAKING A PLACE

We fixed the door to the chicken house the next day, hoping to encourage them to roost inside but instead they have made the garden their home.

GETAWAY

Before the mother hen settled into her new home there was a little bit of mayhem. Jeremy had been advised to tether her by one leg but she broke away after her chicks began wandering beyond her reach. Not finding them in the yard, she flew. It turned out the chicks were huddled beneath the tomato plants all along. When she returned, Jeremy tried to catch her but she was too fast.

CHICKEN RUN!

The next thing we knew, she had hopped onto the wall and made her way into the neighbors yard with Jeremy in pursuit.

ORDER FROM CHAOS

We decided to simply allow the chickens to live inside the garden fence, safe from the curious goats and amorous rooster next door, Within a couple of days they had calmed down and were feeling enough at home to leave the confines of the garden and stroll around the house. The four of us each picked two chickens to name. From left to right are Nugget, Shakori, Ebeneezer, Harry, Duck, Chickasaurus , Sauza (the hen), and Amelia.

COEXISTENCE

The goats became less of a threat as the lure of the compost and fertilizer piles drew the chickens into harmony with their four legged neighbors.

AFTER THE FLOOD

A monster storm moved in quickly, submerging most of the garden towards the end of the month. Although the chickens managed to get underneath the tomato plants which were above water, one of them didn’t make it. Ironically Duck, the only chick named after a waterbird drowned

CAUGHT IN ACTION

When the chicks squeeze through the mesh fence between the garden, their mother hops over the fence.

ROUND AND ROUND

The chickens are excellent scavengers. They spend most of their time making their rounds, circling the house, scratching up bugs and spare bits of food overlooked by the goats.
