Hatch and Go Chicks

Last days of the barnyard experience – Kumasi, May 2 – 9, 3013

BIRTH DAY

May 2nd, after three weeks of sitting on her nest beneath the back steps, six of the seven eggs hatched and Amelia was able to say good by to her dark corner. During those three weeks, she only left the nest for a short while each day to find food and water.

NAVIGATION

Within hours of hatching, one brave chick was able to find its way over the tall sill and out of the construction debris beneath the stairs. Once out, the brave little chick hurried away from its inquisitive yard mates to the safety of his mother.

ALL OUT

After listening to them cheep from inside the stair well, Camille was unable to resist pulling the other chicks out into the daylight to join their mother. Amelia proved to be a protective mom, puffing herself up whenever anyone else cane near.

A BOX OF CHICKEN

We all had a deja vu moment after Jeremy corralled Amelia and her brood into a cardboard box. Six months ago, Amelia’s mother and six siblings arrived at Casa Kumasi in similar fashion. As Jeremy prepared to take his chickens to their new home, Aponche nibbles affectionately on his shorts.

TWISTED

Aponche twists her head in search of rice, reminding us of the movie The Exorcist.

JUSTIN SAYS GOODBYE

Justin and Aponche together for the last time in our courtyard.

FINAL GLIMPSE

Morgan and Kat peer at the box of chickens as Jeremy and Justin prepare to catch a taxi. And down the road they went, Aponche following Jeremy like a dog. One final glimpse of the Casa Kumasi barnyard experiment.
