The dog days of summer brought lots of comfortable sameness and a few surprises most notably, the speedy return of Bob’s smile, and an introduction to our grandson, Nolan.
TURN AROUND
Bob and John headed out for Boone in the work truck and had to turn around when they realized they were flirting with a flat tire. They nearly made it home before she blew.
PEPPERS FOR VODKA
Bob and others are growing a specialty pepper for Fair Game Beverage Company’s Flying Pepper Vodka. The tobago pepper (aka Aji Dulce) is a mild habanero with all of the flavor and very little heat.
OUR BEAUTIFUL GARDENS
We’ve intentionally surrounded ourselves with plants that delight visually, with fragrance and flavor. More eye-candy on: August Yard and Garden
SMILING OUT OF BOTH SIDES OF HIS MOUTH
In only three weeks, Bob was fully recovered from Bell’s Palsy and able to smile like a normal person instead of Dick Cheney. We were expecting his recovery to take months, holding little hope that he’d be able to smile at daughter Emily’s wedding September 2nd.
A BENCH IN THE WOODS
Camille likes to walk through the woods to a particular tree and get grounded on a bench the neighbors put there for exactly that purpose. See more at: Carl’s World
METAMORPHOSIS
The swallowtails are in overdrive at The Plant.
NEW BAKER
Piedmont Biofuels’ summer intern, John learned to bake bread in our Trouts Farm kitchen.
FARE THEE WELL
Holding a quart of biodiesel, John says farewell to his Piedmont Biofuels mentors Bob and Lyle.
OUR LITTLE TOWN
Just as a reminder, we live in the South, a place where they name the grocery stores after farm animals.
THANKSGIVING IN AUGUST
We invited a few friends for dinner and used that as an excuse to have roast turkey-like protein, roasted potatoes, stuffing, gravy, okra and sweet pickles.
STEPPING OUT
Next month daughter Emily and her fiance Tyler will tie the knot in Colorado. So Camille invested in a new pair of shoes.
CAMILLE’S NEW HORSE BUDDIES
Camille has been spending time with Leslie and her two horses Sammy and Magic. They’ve been riding Sammy in a mechanical hackamore but thought they’d tie up a rope halter/side-pull and give it a go.
‘TILL NEXT TIME
Sammy and Leslie say bye bye for a couple of weeks because Bob and Camille are heading to Colorado for Emily and Tyler’s wedding.
THE CUTEST HOUSE IN DENVER
Despite being knee deep in wedding plans, Emily and Tyler graciously invited us for breakfast the morning we arrived in Colorado.
NOLAN
We were delighted to see for ourselves how happily Bob’s grandson Nolan has taken to life on this planet.
BERTHOUD
From Denver we drove north to stay with Rob and Sharyl in Fort Collins, stopping in Berthoud for a look at the grain elevator and the windows of our old second floor apartment.
CHERYL AND SHARYL
Camille ran errands with Sharyl and they paid a short visit to Cheryl. Her Andalusian Tenorio has grown into a very large horse since we last saw him as a yearling in 2006. See what we all looked like then at: Playing with Cheryl’s Horses
CATCHING UP
Julie joined us for an early dinner at Sharyl and Rob’s and brought us two framed photos of Jessie the Wonder Horse. Jessie was our horse for ten years and Julie’s until he went to horse heaven at age 30. Rob was traveling, but we’ll see photos of him in September.

THIS MONTH’S QUOTES:
“As the study of the relationship between living beings and the living land, ecology is not just a branch of scientific inquiry, it is the actual observation of a collective consciousness creating itself.” – Asia Suler
“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”
– Wendell Berry
“Now it’s really too simplistic to say that older people are “happy.” In our study, they are more positive, but they’re also more likely than younger people to experience mixed emotions — sadness at the same time you experience happiness; you know, that tear in the eye when you’re smiling at a friend.” – Laura Carstensen
