Our Other Backyard

We help manage the groovy little eco-industrial business park called The Plant at the end of Lorax Lane. Our life there is nearly as interesting and fun as our life at home. – June 5 through 26, 2017

LOGGING

The one hundred acres adjacent to The Plant’s seventeen is being logged, giving it an apocalyptic look. Soon, the only trees standing will be the ones at The Plant.

THE LORAX

Ironically, Lorax Lane was named after Dr. Suess’s story about a champion for the trees.

RE-HOMED BOX TURTLE

Camille noticed a box turtle with a gorgeous shell plodding towards the clear-cut and plucked it from the driveway, then asked Sherry to re-home it down by the stream beside the Farm and Forest Trail. The logging is more than an eyesore, more than a concern that we’ll soon be surrounded by box stores and parking lots, it is the destruction of one hundred acres of habitat. Animals are on the move.

TIKI PARTY

Chris of Fair Game Beverage Company shakes things up at their annual Tiki Party. Bob and Tami got in on the fun with a sign painted by our next door neighbor, Buffy.

UNICORN ON THE BLUEBERRIES

Bob captured this great image of a Schizura-Unicornis caterpillar on one of the blueberry plants.

POLLINATOR SLOPE

With the help of volunteers and pollinator grant money, we planted one hundred and twenty-four Pink Muhlbergia grass starts on a high-profile slope. Each plant will quickly grow to three feet in diameter. In late summer, they will bloom with pink-to-purple inflorescences in a cloud of fairy tale color. Next year we will split the grass and plant the remainder of the slope.

ANOTHER UPGRADE

One of our go-to contractors, works long hours to pull additional power to one of our offices.

MIMOSA BREAK FOR THE ABUNDANCE LADIES

As Camille and Malcolm were walking the grounds, they plucked sweet mimosa tree blooms and tucked them behind their ears. Enchanted by the scent, they harvested four more blossoms and took them to the Abundance NC office for Hannah and Jenn, who offered us coffee and tea.
